Girlfriend's mother was in the hospital, Dengue fever. She needed a blood transfusion but fortunately is feeling much better. No real cure or vaccine for it, so we're relieved she made it through okay. Should be discharged tomorrow or the following day.
Wow!

Where did she contract Dengue Fever?

Hope she is doing better.

Is this one of those things that remains in your system and if you get run down it can rear its ugly head again?

Girlfriend and her family live in the Philippines. Dengue is fairly common there, and can be deadly.
It can be worse if you get it multiple times, and the goal is prevention. I'm already looking for mosquito nets and some DDT included bug repellent for them as this is the second time in as many years one of her family has had Dengue. (Any suggestions on the spray would be helpful. :) )

She's doing better, hopefully this is the last person in her family to have it.

They make this??
I was under the assumption some brands still do. I remember reading about the clouds of mosquitoes in the backcountry of AK that would lick off anything else and then feast. However that was some time ago, so maybe things have changed.

EDIT: it seems like they make DEET spray now, What that stands for I will have to research further. I'm sure it's just a re-formula of DDT however.

There are four strains of dengue. Getting it the first time is bad as it's common name used to be "bone break fever" because you thought your bones were breaking from the pain.

Getting it a second time, is far more lethal as the antibodies to the first strain help the next strain infect you faster and more extensively for a far more intense / more severe disease.

I hope that she recovers ok.

Dengue is moving into the southern US due to warmer temperatures and the spread of mosquitos that carry it.

It is one of those diseases that I will do a great deal to avoid getting.

All the best,

Peter

70°F and .02 inches rain

Only watched morning football then changed gears to get some mowing. Seems I was cheering the losing teams, mowing was more productive.

In over 20 years fracturing on this island never lost a top link pin until this week. Lost 2 in less than 10 hours.

After some discussion I think we figured out why. Guessing the hydraulic hoses manage to catch and release the Lynch pinch. Simple solution will be reorient pin. But I’m adding a dummy cord string anyway.

Assuming it dries out will be hitting the mowing this morning in hopes of finishing the Laupahoehoe end of property, about 3 hours.

Happy Hour in town this afternoon.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great tractor day

@FriendwithTractor They may have DDT or permethrin infused mosquito nets in the Philippines, which are the preferred route in most places. Some countries in Africa have programs to spray the bedroom walls with DDT to reduce the spread of malaria. The upside is that it is DDT persists for a long time on the wall, the downside is the toxicity. Personally, I would go for permethrin on the netting and walls, and just respray it periodically.

DTT is basically banned for use in the US, as it accumulates in humans, and it and its metabolites remain toxic and carcinogenic. As @thclimer points out in some places the risk may be worth it compared to the diseases.

All the best,

Peter

Good morning, the low is 44 and going up to 55°F Wind NW 11 gusting to 17 mph. A few showers.

I don't think I have anything to do today, nothing 'pressing' anyway.

Drew, how far is Littlestown, PA from you? Brightners tire has ethanol free gas according to their advertising.

Have a safe day all
Bill, thanks for looking that up
its 3 hours away, almost in Maryland and it doesn't look like a high volume station according to this:
