Yup, a split rim not inside of a cage is a good way to loose your head!

I've changed a few, without a cage (didn't have one at the shop!) but we always stood facing the tread, so if it came apart we would be hopefully out of the path of the rim coming apart!

I think you're ready to move on to ether 😜

I think you did a great job. The only concern I'd have is with how the tube might wear a little near the edges of your repair plate. But I'm sure you did as good a job as possible with softening or feathering those edges, and could probably even add body filler later if needed. Probably not any short-term concern, unless the plate edges were left sharp.
I did one better. I wrapped the inside in duct tape! After i ground all the edges as smooth as i could.

We didn't have a cage either. We wrapped a 3/8 chain around the tire and through the centre several times and used an air chuck that screwed onto the valve and was activated about six feet away.
My brother was a firefighter who attended the rescue truck and told us about a call where the split rim exploded and took the top few inches off the workers head.

Well then...

Tires on, holding air. Went to pump up the rear and this is what I found.

It's supposed to look like this:

The stem threads into a piece. Where can I find the stem that threads in?

I know we're focused on the rim here, but look at the sidewall on the tire. Those big cracks and discoloration don't look good either.

I did the first one because it was tubed. I'm infinitely less confident if the tire isn't tubed. I have no idea if they have tubes or not.

This is the raw, skip to the end as i spent 5 minutes figuring out there was no hydrualic fluid, then 15 minutes adding hydraulic fluid... And I'm kicking myself for forgetting to turn on the microphone.

I love it when a plan comes together!
