Trucker's GPS failed again!
Those raised crossings are deadly for truckers and aren't indicated on a regular GPS/map. I wonder if they are on the trucker focused ones? Those cars sure flew!

We have air or hydraulic suspension in Europe. If a lowboy gets high centered at ride height, you can lift the suspension at least 6 inches. Enough to clear enough to back off. Only a dumbass would get it high centered again if 6 inches more clearance is still not enough.

I'm a little hesitant to post this one as two people are dead and their 4 kids saw it happen, but here goes.

State Police say it happened around 4:30am on the southbound side of the highway when the driver of a GMC SUV pulled over after the U-Haul trailer they were towing became detached from the trailer ball on the vehicle.

They say the trailer was only connected by safety chains
The man, the woman and two of the children had gotten out of the vehicle to help fix the issue with the trailer when an Audi SUV hit the trailer and the GMC from behind.

It's a shame that happened, it is an interstate highway so multiple lanes. It should not have happened. They should have gotten the trailer over and off the travel lane. That said, the idiot in the Audi should have had plenty of time and room to avoid them.

It will be interesting to see if the Audi driver was under the influence of something. It's been shown time and again that drunk drivers will do this, essentially focus on and home in on hazard lights or the tail lights of stopped vehicles, to the point where you almost have to debate whether you're safer on the shoulder with lights on vs. lights off.

The biggest problem was likely that the trailer was hanging by the safety chains. Their only thought was "we've got to get off the road". Everything which followed was secondary.

Unfortunately most people seem to focus on what they seem to want to avoid hitting, and then ... Hit it!

How many times do you see sign posts or light poles knocked over out in the empty "field" of the side of the interstate? Or a lone tree in the edge of the roadway ... ?

Can't really blame them for that, unless they were using the wrong size ball for the hitch.

My grandfather had a utility trailer made from an old pickup bed, I think a 1930's Dodge... I only wish I could find the thing today. Anyway, the coupler had worn so badly that, even when used with the correct ball size, it had hopped off the ball at least twice near the end of our years with it (1980's). I suspect that if he'd lived any longer, he'd have been cutting that old hitch off and welding on a new one.

I’ve seen the idea flashing lights attracting people into actually driving towards them instead of avoiding them debated on a bicycle forum. I ride a bicycle quite a bit and use a flashing light on the back. I hope it helps people see me but who knows. I’ve researched the idea that it may actually make someone hit me instead and never really found a definitive answer.
