Wasted Money or How to Save Money

...I used to be in the top tax bracket, paying 53% on last dollar earned so I concentrated on spending less rather than earning more. If I saved $100.00 by doing something myself rather than hiring someone, I'd have had to earn over $200.00 to have that $100.00 left after taxes.

Good point.

On a related note, pundits tell us if, say, inflation is 3% and wages increase by 3%, then we're keeping up on buying power. Nope. A 3% wage increase is only about 2% after taxes.

Income taxes have come down a bit since I retired so I might do things a bit differently if I was still working. I used to be in the top tax bracket, paying 53% on last dollar earned so I concentrated on spending less rather than earning more. Good point. But taxes are quite a bit lower here in the US, versus Canada. Top bracket here is only 37%, and that's only on earnings above $610k. The 1%'er threshold is presently around $450k, making that $610k threshold truly rarified air.

Took Consumer Cellular up on their 13.95 monthly plan offer and transferred the family landline going back to the 60’s to the new phone.

Without any toll calls or special services the landline was running $83 a month for a few incoming calls each month… with taxes/fees the monthly should be under $15 .

Last month it was the $108 monthly newspaper that went back to the 1950’s

It’s true I’m not up to date on local news and do miss it even being it was a mere shell of what it once was.

These two moves will save over $2100 annually.

Taxes of all kinds remain my biggest outgo with property taxes at the top.

Started questioning the income property as statewide and local rent control limits upside but everything related to upkeep continues to rocket higher…

Why would you have kept a landline for a few calls a month?

It was the folks… I was still getting calls from distant relatives and friends as it’s been the family number since the 60’s.

It’s difficult at times for me to move forward but little by little I am making progress.

Up until the week mom passed she would spend each morning reading the newspaper… really amazing how a person with diminishing memory could be totally content sitting at the kitchen table reading the morning paper…

Both were legacy from those that are no more.

I switched the landline number to voip onto our fiber internet. Same here, have had that number for 40 years and family still calls in on it. Jon

How much to add to the VOIP?

House doesn’t presently have Internet but many no longer have the landline copper option,

I wonder if telephone companies will remove the old copper and drop on request?

I’ve been asking my wife the same thing for 15 years. We have a landline, which is used exclusively for being bothered 4 times per day by telemarketers. No one answers it, it’s very rare anyone uses it, but she insists we keep it.

I choose my battles, this one isn’t important. :ROFLMAO:

I dunno. When finally came thru here about 12 years ago, I took down the old cable and demarc box. Just cut the cable off at the pole as high as I could reach.

I sometimes ask myself why I keep a cell phone when I almost never use it. Just a cheap prepaid flip-phone. $20 for 3 months for something like 180 min is cheap enough. Wife would have a fit if I got rid of it.

It is straightforward to move a landline number to VOIP, but you do need some amount of internet service. If you don't have any, I'd suggest going @Oaktree's route and move the landline number to a mobile phone, perhaps with an eSIM to enable dual sim use.

Ooma is running a home VOIP special at the moment, and often have one.

All the best, Peter
