    Tiller slip clutch

There’s two conditions that the clutch protects by slipping. 1) Shock loads to the tractor’s and tiller’s PTO and gearbox when the tiller encounters an object that wants to jam and stop the tiller/pto from turning. 2) Applying too much load to the tiller’s gearbox from a larger tractor. The...

Pat's Easy Change Calling Pat’s Cat 2 owners - Are you happy?

I had Pat’s on my Cat II. The adjustment bolts were weak and would bend so I replaced them with a stronger grade bolt. They bent too. I had to take them to a machine shop to remove. But then I realized, why am I trying to make the Pat’s NOT pivot side to side in the lift arm balls? There’s no...

1988 John Deere Hydro 175 - Engine stalls when I engage the blades

It’s a safety or reverse switch. It think your either not on the seat, or trying to backup while mowing without engaging an override.

    Using lifting tongs on bucket

…like on a small 3pth boom pole. Goldilocks length: not too short so tongs can raise high enough, not too long that front of tractor gets light. Seems like I’ve seen pictures of people use the boom from a post hole digger. OP should also consider using skidding cone to reduce ruts, as the...

    single action cylinder question(s)

Yeah…now that I think about it for 2 seconds, that is how every return line to fill port works.

    single action cylinder question(s)

You mean have a loose line with an open end that gets stuffed back into the hydraulic fill port? Hmmm…well sure, that would prevent the relief valve operating for a few seconds when lowering / retracting the cylinder, but wouldn’t you the have ~3000psi of hydraulic fluid dumping out the end of...

    single action cylinder question(s)

Yes. Basically. When the lever is at neutral position, in the middle, the cylinder isn’t moving, in or out. To find out if you have a “float position” on the SCV, press the lever all the ways forward (or backwards) and see if it can “pop” forward just a little more to a detent position and...

Pulling stuck vehicles out of the ditch with a tractor

We want to be good people and help someone in need, but don’t want liability: always have the stuck person attach the tow line. Run the line under the blade to the drawbar. If line gets tension, it will lift the blade as it needs to, a 3pth has no downforce.

How to Operate the 2nd & 3rd SCV on JD 3046R

You have 3 SCV’s (I, II & III). Each valve has two ports. (3 valves x 2 ports / valves = 6 ports total). Look at the pictures on the stickers. It shows the function of the respective top and bottom port. One port is to push the connected hydraulic cylinder out, one pushes the cylinder in...

How does hydraulics (& PowerBeyond) work?

I’m trying to figure out the function of the ports at the power beyond block at my tractor. (I.e. does my manuals have typo, or is the loader valve “T” and “P” ports piped “backwards”?). Here’s a “similar” photo from a manual that is years newer than my manual. Can you tell flow direction...

How does hydraulics (& PowerBeyond) work?

Basically the loader valve has 2 SCV valves: I and II. Each SCV has a port A & B. Valve I for the loader boom has a float mode (beyond retracting/lowering/ pressurizing port IA), Valve II has a regenative mode (beyond extending/dumping/ pressurizing port IIA). Both extra modes appear to work...

    Cold weather starting

Everything starts (or doesn’t) based on the fuel’s ability to flow through the filter (being a place the gel collects), the lines, ejectors and your thermal start. Be careful trusting your supplier to time the summer/winter mix your need. I use an additive. Some people mix in no.1 fuel.
