All other things being equal: Driving a 60” tiller at 80% speed of a 48” tiller’s speed uses the same horsepower as the 48” tiller. You’re tilling the same amount of dirt at the same rate. Same rate (of work done) = same horsepower. At 80% speed, a 60” tiller will also take the same amount of...

    Replace wood splitter hydraulic seals?

So I took the piston, rod and gland to a hydraulic shop about 25 miles away where they custom measure and order the seals instead of tracking down the model and relying on a manufacturer’s dated and often revised part list. They gave me a bag of seals, a set screw, told me where seals go and...

    Hay Ride Wagon Build

With that style steering, the tighter you turn, the narrower the front (let’s call it) “effective axle width” decreases, relative to the wagon width. At 90° pivot, it’s essentially zero, a single point in the center. Here, the wagon is totally relying on the back tires, and frame stiffness, for...

    Replace wood splitter hydraulic seals?

That’s been my attitude for a couple years. It’s probably only a quart or two that leaks over the course of a splitting season (~4 cords). But man, a little oil sure looks like a lot. I guess it does keep the wedge lubed up as it slides on the beam. …but I know it’s getting worse and worse.

    Replace wood splitter hydraulic seals?

My Huskee wood splitter with a 35 ton, 5” x 24” cylinder has slowly been developing a leak around the inner seal, around where the cylinder exits. Splitter still has plenty of splitting power. Questions: 1) Who supplies quality parts and what is expected price? I found the official repair...

Pat's Quick Hitch and arms... slanting when lifting?

That’s just the way 3 point hitch arms work. The adjust bolts on the Pats eliminates the swivel ball feature of your lift arms, but the connection STILL NEEDS TO SWIVEL. Tightening the adjustment bolts so that the Pats can’t swivel means the implement’s pin HAS TO swivel in the Pat’s hook arm...

25 Acres worth buying hay equipment?

Can fire wood be too dry?

The only effect I’ve found with “too dry” wood is when you don’t have to “spend” btu’s vaporizing water into steam that goes up chimney, is the wood burns hotter, gasifies faster, which requires more oxygen to combust. It can be hard to control the fuel/air/heat balance that produces a steady...

Tractor Tire Size - is bigger always better? (width, diameter, aspect ratio)

There’s no simple answer. Do you want a tire to float, to dig, to float yet dig “lightly” over a wider area? Do you want maximum contact area? 41. CobyRupert

    Motor exhaust noises

Publishing Loader Capacity Numbers That Far Exceed The Capacity Of The Axles

Exactly. If that 1600lb rating is good for when you hit a 6” rut at 8 mph, it’s good for 2000lbs on a stone driveway at 3 mph. What the axle is rated isn’t just one number.

Publishing Loader Capacity Numbers That Far Exceed The Capacity Of The Axles

Interesting that without ballast you can only put the weight of the tractor and bucket load on the front axle. With rear ballast, and a strong loader, you can put a lot more weight (the tractor, bigger bucket load and additional rear ballast weight) on the front axle.

Shhh, keep this a secret…but: The point of “unbonding” the generator’s N + G when connected to and supplying your house’s panel (where N + G are already bonded) is so neutral current returning to the generator’s winding, from the panel, is not using the ground (G) conductor as a parallel path...

    Tractor Died While Blowing Snow!

Sounds like filter. I have used a blow dryer on a filter to warm it up to get me back to the shed. Maybe I was lucky. I think diesel fuel can start to get cloudy around 40°F as the wax (not the technical name) begins to separate. I would never trust my retailer to have the correct winter mix...

    Boosting question.

Probably not a battery issue if jumpering from a good battery, battery pack, or other vehicle does nothing. Test to see if voltage is getting to the starter solenoid.

    JD Right to Repair

You repeatedly used the phrase “To give the owner…” Your definition of “owner” is different than mine. I guess that’s the crux of the argument.

Log splitter and a flying log - safety

So….no rifle or shotgun shells buried in the tree? It is strange how some tree species strips apart in stringy fibers like string cheese, while other species you just have to tap them and they pop open like a bolder.

What have you done to your Branson today?

Ha, ha. That’s a typical upper Hudson Valley forecast! Don’t forget that “all of the above” is also a possible answer. [emoji41]

Looking for info - 3 point log splitter

Yes. …but where are the tank and pto pump? Something to be added onto the 3 point hitch mounted splitter? Is there room? At that point, you’re just one small gas motor away from independent standalone splitter. Many woodsplitters use a 2 stage pump so that: cycle times are quicker on the...

Looking for info - 3 point log splitter

Tractor’s hydraulic pressure (& the diameter/area of the hydraulic cylinder it is pressing on) will determine the force produced. That is: 2000 psi (pounds per square inch) on a 20 square inch cylinder would produce 40,000 lbs (20 tons) of force. Flow (rate) will determine the speed (and...
