    Decent scratch resistant safety/sunglasses?

I have prescription bifocal sunglasses made by WileyX. ANSI rated, expensive, and polycarbonate, but you can get an antiscratch coating. You might be able to get them with no prescription on the top (called "planar") and your reader power on the bottom.

    Buffing scratches in plexiglass?

Acrylic and polycarbonate are great materials unless you want to see through them for a long time :) They're relatively soft which makes them prone to scratches and difficult to polish. Most eyeglasses (including safety glasses) are polycarbonate, that's why they sell you anti-scratch coatings...

Why not sugar for ballast instead of salt?

Thanks for that thread. A few nuggets of useful information in the 13 pages: Beet juice is what's left after the sugar (and pulp etc) has been removed. Supposedly non-corrosive. Sugar solution is corrosive, but nobody was sure if it was more or less corrosive than a salt solution. A few other...

Roller repair - broken end shaft

I finally remembered to post a follow up  I screwed 3 casters to a long board to hold the roller and allow it to spin. I drilled a 3/4" hole in a scrap of plywood and used the stub on the good end to align the plywood to the jig. I then flipped the roller end for end and put the broken...

Why not sugar for ballast instead of salt?

Beet juice is all the rage but it's expensive. Salt is cheap but corrosive. Why not sugar? I doubt there's anything unique about beets that makes their juice "special", more likely it's just the high sugar content. You can dissolve more sugar per gallon than salt so you'd get more weight per...

    Spline lube?

I'm a fan of the liquid waxes for mountain bike chains. They don't pick up dirt like oil or grease based products. Back to the shadows...

Who want to chat about plasma cutters?

I picked up a YES brand CUT-65DS on super discount. Only cut a few things, but works great, lots of good reviews. Supposed to cut up to 1" mild steel. I cut a piece of 1/2" 4140 plate, it did a nice job. The manual is lacking, there's no chart for thickness vs CFM and/or current. Once the...

    wood oil based stain/preservatives?

At the local state park where I work, the old guys swear by "CWF" clear wood finish. We use cedar tinted on the cedar kit cabins. Looks great. Oil clean up. It's a big name product, like Olympia, can't remember exactly.

6v/12v dual system and maintaining batteries with a solar panel question

Connect two 1.5V and a 9V battery in series. Connect them to a 12V charger. Same current through all 3 batteries. Now tell me how the voltage will be the same across each battery. Any new, modern, matching pair of 12V SLAs will be close enough in internal resistance to not matter. Put a new one...

6v/12v dual system and maintaining batteries with a solar panel question

Looks like Tx Jim has the answer. You can verify this with a voltmeter, - on one battery and + on the other. If you get 12V, you're good to go to hook up a solar charger. Purists will argue that one battery might get more charge than the other since their voltages won't match exactly, but hey...

Upgrading From the Dewalt 18V Platform

In theory, the adapter should allow any 20V battery on any 18V tool, I don't know why there would be restrictions. I'm in the same boat. I bought 4 non-Dewalt batteries from Amazon, 2 Li-Ion and 2 NiMh. So far so good, but I have doubts if they'll last 20 years like the Dewalt NiCds did. Dave

    New Kubota..loader edge?

If you have scrap pieces that's great, but to buy a piece new it's expensive. 2"x10' ABS is less than $10 and you get two pieces for a 5' bucket. I think the round shape of piping helps the leading edge float better on gravel driveways.

    New Kubota..loader edge?

I used 2" ABS pipe on my bucket and gravel driveway, made a big difference and it was cheap. I slit it on the tablesaw and used a rubber mallet to put it on. PVC is too brittle at freezing temperatures.

Rear blade for snow on gravel, pipe or rubber mat?

I had good luck with 2" ABS pipe on my front bucket. Made a big difference. Cut the slit on a table saw. You can't use PVC, it gets brittle and shatters below 32 degrees.
