Plant 'em deep. Check the span tables, but to span 12 feet, you'd roughly want a 12 inch thick pole or beam. I would set them in concrete if it were me. Use tar for the underground portion of the wood pole...

As a home builder and remodeler, I used to keep everything. Windows. doors, anchors, nuts/bolts, flashing, everything. Then I moved and everything went in the dumpster or on the street for neighbors. No more hoarding, everything goes bye bye.......

As you said, it can be done.....but it is exceedingly rare for a basic homeowner to pull off a custom build, or even a simple one, with no experience. Now if a person has some background in construction, then that is a totally different matter.... And yes, large corporate builders are worse...

No reason to ever own a truck that's not 4WD. Price difference is not that much anymore, nor is gas mileage. You get stuck once and it's worth it....Plus you lose the ability to ever go to the really cool places where normal people can't get to....

As a longtime GC, I would say absolutely you 'can' run a project as an Owner/Builder. The hardest part as mentioned is getting and running the subs. But it depends on the level of quality you desire as well. There is no way you can achieve the level of quality that a GC with years of experience...
