    Finally ... I'm back!

Thank you, it's great to hear you all are doing Ok. I share your thoughts on grandchildren - we're starting down the same track! It's a good thing though. Hope all stay safe.

1975 165 stuck in neutral range.. How to Unstuck it?

That's Ok, don't rush anything, much less taking any short-cuts. Disconnect brake linkages, lighting cables, remove foot-rests, etc. Look at the drive couplings of both transmission shafts so you can picture what needs to happen whilst reassembling halves. A dry run in reassembling halves...

1975 165 stuck in neutral range.. How to Unstuck it?

Haha, and a heap of other hazards, like having half a tractor slip off a jack and fall onto you! But seriously, it could be a good idea to also mention he blocks F & R of both front wheels. I do worry about people hurting themselves, but he seems capable.

Drain gearbox oil from both plugs - about 5-6 gallons. Remember to put wedges in both sides at the front axle to prevent the front half tipping to one side after it's separated. You should only need about a foot of space to repair whatever is wrong. Remember gasket, sealant, and cleaning of...

1975 165 stuck in neutral range.. How to Unstuck it?

I understand you mean R-1 & 2-3, referring to the lock-out mechanism, but why does he mention four springs and plungers? Here's a picture of an 8- and a 6-speed shift cover from a 135 book. Could it indeed be an 8speed? Or are they a different design in the bigger tractors?

Harry's explanation is all correct. Can you post a picture from above of the selector rails? I expected to see one rail for H-L and 2 rails for the main gearbox, but isn't there another? As far as a trial run, just temporarily refit the cover with 2 or 3 bolts and see how that H-L selector works.

Note: Each spring has a steel ball, or maybe a tapered slider, beneath it. If you move gear selectors while the cover is off, they're likely to jump out - hence the idea of selecting neutral before removing the cover.

Is that an 8speed gearbox? If so, it looks like a spring is missing. The ball? Or tapered slider? may still be in the hole. Either way, a small mechanic's magnet should find it - that's from repeated experience. Keep the springs in place with grease down the hole. Some pics from a 135 service...

1975 165 stuck in neutral range.. How to Unstuck it?

That's good, glad I remembered that I had them. IIRC, try to put both levers in the neutral position before you lift the shift cover off. I'm hoping you find the locking screw beneath the range lever has come loose. If that isn't the problem, it will be on the rear of the gearbox at the range...

1975 165 stuck in neutral range.. How to Unstuck it?

Just remembered that I have some pics of the gearbox from a friend's FE35 when I renewed all the bearings in it. I found these, thinking they might give you an insight to what yours looks like - it's the same as this one. They aren't as specific as I expected, but they're the only ones I have...

    Finally ... I'm back!

Good news all round by the sound of it! Great times when they are small - so interesting and just so much fun. Fingers crossed for you all for some soaking rain.

    S320 Gearbox bearing failure

Hi all, to prevent unnecessary head-scratching, here's the link to a parallel thread in the Ford-New Holland section. It's the same tractor, and they've got onto some helpful info for me. This could also assist other owners of S320s or NH 1220s. Some enlightening pics too...

Ford NH 1220 / Shibaura S320 Gearbox bearing failure

Additional scary pics: If this isn't enough, I also have to remove the diff pinion shaft for repair - another several days' work!

Ford NH 1220 / Shibaura S320 Gearbox bearing failure

Hi guys, some good news after a protracted effort on Sunday. Harry's link to the Case-New Holland parts catalogue was a help, and a lot easier to understand, even though the Shibaura PDF I downloaded was describing the parts also in English, on the C-NH site you only need to shadow the part to...
