    Front axle leak

For about a year I have found that every month or 2 I am down half a quart of fluid in the front axle case of my 1999 B1700 HST. I looked and looked and could never see a leak. The book says to use either super UDT OR 80 weight gear oil ( which is weird, kind of like dating Heather Locklear OR...

    800 hour valve adjust

As I near 800 hours on my B1700 HST, I need to consider the recommended valve adjustment maintenance . This is the only thing in the list of scheduled maintenance that I would have to ship to the dealer to get done. That means getting a truck and trailer, shlepping 80 miles , not having the...

    Long time gone

Last time I posted here was about 3 years ago. I remember when we first hit 1000 registered users, now it is almost 20,000! Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Are Bird and Mark Chalkley still posting here? PaulB 1999 B1700 HST FEL, back blade, Millcreek 50 manure spreader, King Kutter...

    motor design

Having just bought a motorcycle, I had to make the decision between two cylinders, three, or four, overhead cams or pushrods, two valves per cylinder, or four, etc., and it got me to thinking, I have NO idea what type of motor is in my B1700. It must be overhead valve I assume, flatheads went...

    The Man in black

Not one thing to do with tractors, but I just CAN'T be the only Johnny Cash fan on this board, so I figured a friendly pointer was OK. I have been a fan of his since I was a little boy, but I have to say that his most recent CD's are the best work of his ever. I just got his newest (American...

Harley help from my tractorbynet friends

I have spent hours and hours searching the net for a Harley forum that is even close to what we have here at tractorbynet - easy to use, friendly, full of information, lots of active users, etc, and I can not find anything even close. Is tractorbynet simply head and shoulders over everything...

    Muhammed a little help please!

I can not figure out how to search the archives, looking for a thread prior to the site update. Redhawk needs "Sticking throttle on a B2400HSDB", and I can not help him get there.

    Hey, my balls are frozen!

Went to hook up the manure spreader last night, and the 3 balls on the inside of the pto shaft (the end that hooks up to the tractor pto) were frozen in place, so I could not slide the pto shaft on to the pto drive. I had to get a hot air gun and defrost the pto collar, then everything slid on...

Any WWII warbird fans out there?

Not a darn bit related to tractors, but the "brain trust" has not failed me yet, so I figured it is worth a try. How in the world do those radial cylinder motors work, like on the Hellcat and Firecat? How can they hook 12 - 18 cylinders up, in the same verticcal plane, to one crankshaft? On the...

    This must be a record!

Muhammed - for a year or so I have held the (dubious) honor of having started the longest thread in tractorbynet history ("Hydraulics S-L-O-W in the cold"), some 22 pages if printed out. Surely this has now been eclipsed by that most famous of "why didn't I think of that" inventions, the...

    Another good TV show

Thanks to whoever posted last week about the history of agricultural equipment show - it was interesting. Tomorrow on the History Channel at 8 PM EASTERN time is a special on the timber trade. Interestingly, this is a part of the series called Suicide Missions which usually focuses on things...

A chip off the old block

Just got back from the local pumpkin farm with my family, including my 8 month old son. Most of it, like the pumpkins and the scarecrows and the halloween stuff, he thought was pretty ho hum, but every time one of the hayride tractors came rumbling by he would stop whatever he was doing, and...

    Up on two wheels....no more!!

In case anybody missed my long post on how NOT to use a rotary mower ("Up on two wheels...need new underwear"), it makes entertaining reading, so you might want to search for it. For those who read the thread, and especially those who offered help (lots of you), I have the problem fixed. The...

    experiences with my tiltmeter

I've had my tiltmeter for about 2 weeks now, and thought I would pass along some thoughts, as I believe this little piece of plastic may very well be the most important piece of equipment I have yet purchased for my tractor. I bought online from R&B manufacturing, the first time I ever bought...

    Anybody have a Jeep Wrangler?

Way off tractors here, but there is a lot of experience on this board so I thought I would ask. Regarding the Jeep Wrangler (the one that looks like a "Jeep'), any experiencces good or bad relative to the available 4 cylinder (2.5 litre, 120 horsepower) vs. the 6 cylinder (4.0 litre, 180...
