John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. The problem is it is missing an axel shaft in the front end. I bought this recently at auction. Lesson learned.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Update: Since I didn't have the time on days it wasn't raining, I sent it in to get looked at. I just got a call from the shop. Apparently, this axel has been apart before. It is missing a axel shaft in the differential. I am waiting on a price for the shaft and seals. This tractor was purchased...

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. The shaft has a coupler on both sides of the drive shaft with a roll pin in each one. Sadly, they are still connected, lol

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. There are roll pins on either side of the shaft in the couplers. I haven't seen any other pins.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. The problem is definitely in the front axel.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. I haven't had the chance to drop the axel or work on it. It is getting picked up tomorrow.

Lol thanks. I do enjoy it but finding time is the key.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

It’s almost like there is no ring gear contacting the pinion. It looks like a pain to get into the diff. Likely have to drop the entire axel and Cartier assembly to get in there. Will take a closer look tomorrow.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks for the reply. No I am not sure that anything inside the front differential turns. The front wheels spin in both directions with zero resistance or noise with the front drive engaged( not moving) the shaft coupler is on the splines front and rear of shaft and connected on both sides. The...

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

So I did some further checking today. I was wrong on my original thought that the linkage at the rear of the tractor was the problem. It works. I slid the front driveshaft cover back on both sides to expose the front drive shaft. With the mfwd hanlde up (engaged) the shaft does not spin. Down it...

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

It's not easy to see. Still waiting for a helper, LOL. Will try this weekend. Massive thunderstorm yesterday and lost power.

Ok thanks! I will try to get a helper and see what I can figure out later.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

With the handle pulled or pushed the external shaft rotates and it appears the internal shaft rotates. Is there a way to see inside the housing what is happening without splitting? With tractor moving and handle pulled, it will grind. I tried that yesterday for a second. That tells me that...

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. Do you know a way to troubleshoot further without splitting the machine? Would bad spring loaded ball bearing detents cause this? To me it seems that the linkage is moving and the collar is moving over the splines when the handle is pulled.

John Deere 4600 MFWD will not engage

Thanks. No, I have a 400CX loader on the front. No backhoe yet. I am looking for a 48 backhoe with the correct mounting brackets. So far no luck. I can put the rear up on stands and lift the front with bucket or put on stands. The front wheels just free spin in both directions with one wheel or...
