Update: Since I didn't have the time on days it wasn't raining, I sent it in to get looked at. I just got a call from the shop. Apparently, this axel has been apart before. It is missing a axel shaft in the differential. I am waiting on a price for the shaft and seals. This tractor was purchased...
It’s almost like there is no ring gear contacting the pinion. It looks like a pain to get into the diff. Likely have to drop the entire axel and Cartier assembly to get in there. Will take a closer look tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply. No I am not sure that anything inside the front differential turns. The front wheels spin in both directions with zero resistance or noise with the front drive engaged( not moving) the shaft coupler is on the splines front and rear of shaft and connected on both sides. The...
So I did some further checking today. I was wrong on my original thought that the linkage at the rear of the tractor was the problem. It works. I slid the front driveshaft cover back on both sides to expose the front drive shaft. With the mfwd hanlde up (engaged) the shaft does not spin. Down it...
With the handle pulled or pushed the external shaft rotates and it appears the internal shaft rotates. Is there a way to see inside the housing what is happening without splitting? With tractor moving and handle pulled, it will grind. I tried that yesterday for a second. That tells me that...
Thanks. Do you know a way to troubleshoot further without splitting the machine? Would bad spring loaded ball bearing detents cause this? To me it seems that the linkage is moving and the collar is moving over the splines when the handle is pulled.
Thanks. No, I have a 400CX loader on the front. No backhoe yet. I am looking for a 48 backhoe with the correct mounting brackets. So far no luck. I can put the rear up on stands and lift the front with bucket or put on stands. The front wheels just free spin in both directions with one wheel or...
Thanks. So, since it is all mechanical and internal, it looks as if the only way to determine the cause of failure is to split the rear. I saw that block on the parts breakdown and in the service manual. Do you know if the fluid level in the front axel has any impact on the 4wd engaging on the...
Well, I lifted the wheel. It free spins. I checked the fluid in the axel, It was low. I changed the fluid and filled to correct level. It still does not engage. I tried bumping it into 4wd in reverse. Still nothing. I took it for a long ride and stopping and pulling lever. Still nothing. With...
Hi All,
I have a JD 4600. I can not get it to go into 4WD. The linkage is intact and the handle rotates the shaft on the side of the trans. The roll pin is in place and the shaft moves in both directions when the handle is raised or pushed down. I am going to jack up the front wheel and see if...
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the reply. I am not sure as I am awaiting delivery on the tractor. I know it has a set of rear remotes. I don't know if they are Power Beyond. Is there an easy way to tell? My son will be picking it up next week and I can have him verify.
Hi All,
I just picked up a JD 4600 at auction and I am excited. A friend has a JD 48 backhoe that I can buy cheaply. It is coming off a JD 4310. Does the 4310 and the 4600 use the same side mount brackets? If not, does anyone have a part number for the 4600 mounting brackets? I have been trying...
