Maybe I am mis-understanding your question, but I always push the clutch in to engage, disengage or change RPM selection for PTO on my B7500. My manual says, "To avoid damage of transmission, before shifting the PTO gear shift lever, fully disengage the main clutch." Pg 36 of Operator's Manual

I don't recall ever touching the tensioner, but the outer cover was too hot to hold my finger against. My belts would disintegrate and leave a black sooty mess.
