    Water well & drought?

I'm thinking of switching from city water, and having a well drilled. Neighbor's results of wells are a mixed bag around here. But I'm wondering about the effects of the drought we've had here in central Indiana this summer (driest summer since the '60's.). I know surface water is different...

    Bull-chasing in the woods...

So we borrowed a bull for stud with our Highland cow. Moving them from one pasture to another, and he escapes into the woods. Long story short, we chased him around for 4 days. This guy is not very big, but crafty -- he would double back, let you get just so close & then run. He was killing...

    Wasp nailed me

Pulling back some junk to clean up behind the house, looked behind & saw a nest of angry wasps! Tried to jump back, but a couple of them got me on the forearm. Felt just like a nail gun, right below the elbow. I'm not TOO big a wimp, but this surprised me how quick & how hard this hurt. If I...

    Elderberry jam

Early harvest 2 days ago, and made 6 pint jars of elderberry jam. Lots of work, but a good feeling to harvest your own & make your own! Wish I had the patience to make some elderberry wine. Not so great this year on apples or peaches, but quite a few pears coming on.

    Fess Parker has passed away...

Sad to note the passing of Fess Parker, who played Davy Crockett in the '50's. The "King of the Wild Frontier". How many of us wore "coonskin" caps? The theme song from the show hit #1 in 1955. Believe he also played Daniel Boone later on. Mom had a cute pic of me age 2 or 3 with Davy...

    Wife REALLY wanted Christmas lights

Moved here 5 yrs. ago, our house is almost completely hidden from the road. Told my wife, "No point in putting up Christmas lights, just for our own benefit." I thought she was OK with that. But yesterday while I was gone, she had our 26-yr.-old daughter put some lights up on upstairs deck...

    Lung cancer is not fun

I've seen some posts lately by people who've stopped smoking. God bless you and more power to you! My dad died a slow agonizing death from lung cancer and the treatments for it. He smoked off and on for 50 years, always joked about how he could quit whenever he wanted to -- he had done it...

Great way to remember loved ones

May I suggest this to everyone? Make a tape of your loved ones, either audio or video. I can't tell you how valuable it is to me to listen to my Dad's & Mom's voices on tapes they made for me in 1988. Do you realize we are only the 2nd generation that's able to do this? Oral history...

    I need a pedal power 4-wheeler

Does anybody know of a vehicle like an ATV, or 4-wheeler, but that operates by pedal power? Wife and I are both 54, need to get around our 20 acres, but we need the exercise and don't like wasting gas. I've seen 3-wheel bikes, and 4-wheel bike-type "cars". What would really work well is a...

    Divorcing and then laid off

Brother-in-law's been married 20 yrs., has a daughter age 16. Wife tells him she wants a divorce. Goes to counseling, makes no difference. She is being influenced by a circle of friends also divorcing or already divorced. He's doing everything she asks, but she tells him, "It doesn't matter...

RED ALERT! Watch your cell phone bill!

Good friend of mine, just got fired last week for refusing to illegally charge customers for services they didn't order. He has worked 15 yrs. for the local store of a major telecomm company. Won't identify it, but it's initials precede B, U and U. So my friend is a good salesman, but...

Rust in large gas storage tank

What's the best way to get rust out of a large (300 gal.) gasoline storage tank? I've seen some discussion on here about smaller tanks. Bought this with a stand about 2 yrs. ago, discovered it has some rust, but no obvious holes. It does have a place for a paper filter above the hose and...

    Cattle: fencing & stream access?

Can anybody offer some suggestions? I have 5 Highlander cattle, and we are all just getting used to each other. They are strong and stubborn, and have long horns. I need to put them in a small pasture (2-3 ac.) for a while. Wife has heard that they will stay in an area with 2 electric wires...

    Go, little "Bota!

First major snow of the season here in central Indiana! 3 1/2 inches yesterday, another 6 inches overnight, more coming down. Got out there to clear the drive yesterday afternoon. Little 6100 diesel just purrs along, sippin' the fuel, scraping with the 4' blade. No front end loader, that...

Oil & Fuel  Fuel additives for diesel?

 I know it's good to add Sta-bil to gasoline in cans or in mowers, etc. But is there a similar product for diesel? I have an older model B6100 'Bota. Several people around central Indiana had problems in the -12 degree weather the other day, with their diesel gelling up. Some guys...
