Update
Well I've used this now for 3 trips to and from Mississippi (~800 miles @way) and it seems to reduce my fuel mileage by about 1 MPG.

The first time I used it I just stuck my cross-bed toolbox inside. The second time I took the toolbox out of the back and "mounted" it temporarily on the upper bars.

With the panels off I haven't made the effort to take down the frame, since I keep on finding I have to transport a ladder or a few 12' 2x4's. However it still has enough clearance that when I picked up my Craigs List score of pallet racking they were able to load the uprights palletized with a fork lift.

Another update and refinement.

I added a "window" to the front of the box.

I've had a piece of plexiglass for about 30 years, I think it was used for a desktop cover.

I cut a hole in the plywood and put down some window sealant around the side, laid the cut to size plexiglass down, put some wood strips on the plexiglass then drilled holes and put some small bolts I had thru.

Makes a world of difference having the window when the bed isn't full.

Now I have to break down and buy some shorter bolts. :) There goes another couple of dollars.

Or just cut them down.

I wanted to thank everyone for their posts. I am increasing the height of the sides and the back of my 2012 Ram 1500 Quad Cab to increase the carrying capacity. Mostly hauling my tools and other home maint/repair/reno/remod items for our homes and rental properties.

Will use hinges/angle brackets, paint with epoxy, tarp, and some of the left over as the top. Most of my stuff will be in Homer buckets. Also thinking of reinforcement with ratchet straps around it while on interstate. No longer a speed racer. I will get there when I get there.

Need to make trek from El Paso to DC and just don't feel like hitching up the trailer.

Leaving my 300+k-miles 2002 Chevy Suburban here. Drove it down with trailer and helped my daughter move from Houston to El Paso, but it is time for an engine rebuild and I just don't want to be stranded somewhere along the 2k-mile trip.

As I posted this, I saw the plexiglass window update. I got a roll of 24 polycarbonate/Lexan 4'x8' sheets on amazon in 2016. At some point they will finally go on top of the pergolas etc, but I will see what I can do to incorporate. Maybe as the top or the back piece? It is a lot lighter than the plywood...of course it is only .030"/30mil thickness

Thanks again!
