Getting ready to do my 400 hour service and one of the tasks is to change the front axle oil. The manual tells me to use, "SAE 90 gear oil or better, or same as transmission oil. Now I'm no chemist but these two items are just a tad different . . .
Any idea if they can be swapped in the front axle and what would be the benefit/disadvantage of doing so?
Thanx,
Jim

A lot of Gear, Motor and Hydraulic oils line up and are equivalent, at least in viscosity..

I think you'll find that the tractor came factory filled with the same oil as the transmission, and it's about 50/50 on here whether it was swapped to gear oil during a change.

Many come with hydraulic oil in front of axle. I had some leaking. Did some reading on Kioti forum and checked with my dealer and a lot of guys switched it to 80w90.
When I did mine I switched it to 80w90 and have had no problems and no leaking.

If you frequently carry heavy loads with the FEL, the lower viscosity trans oil will start to weep past the axle seals after a couple of hundred hours or so. Using heavier 80-90W gear oil won't get past the seals as easily.

I've been using 80-90W oil in the front axles of my tractors for many years with no issues. My dealer actually recommends it.

I've been running gear oil in my Kioti DK front axle the past 24 years.

Mine came with Hyd oil as mentioned above. I replaced it with same. Has about <800 ish hrs on it now. I am planning to do a check/refresh fluids in it soon. I may put in the 90W. Hadn't seen any leaking yet, granted it doesn't get terribly stressed out normally.

Be much easier to see too

I read up on this once myself, due to interest.

I read that the UTTO is best for seal life.
And there was NO indication that sever service performance is required. It is only a hypoid differential that produced the pressure along with sliding that such "heavy duty" lubes are intended for.

I run UTTO in everything but the engine!

I checked this in that I had replaced the oil in mine.
