Looking for recommendations for a 3-pt log splitter

Thanks, I am not a fan of the vertical splitter, but I'll research it.
I wasn't too sure at first but splitting larger logs, it's nice not having to lift them up onto a horizontal one. I just got myself a stool and sat there splitting away. I don't have a fire now though so it's redundant.

I seen a guy in town splitting big rounds with a hydraulic splitter mounted upside down on a skid-steer. It was fun to watch. He would quarter them and then his buddies would run them through a second, self contained splitter.

That is what the neighbor does though the splitter cycles quite slow (BIG cyl). He is way faster busting apart the big rounds with the frost tooth on the excavator.

IXLR8:

Am I to understand you don't have hydraulics on the tractor you can hook a splitter to? A good three-point hydraulic splitter should cost less than the farm store stand-alone specials. They are so basic that nothing can really go wrong. I've had mine for 15 years and split at least 100 cords with no problems, Operates horizontally and vertically, no small engine (or hydraulic pump) to maintain or to go bad. Runs on any of my tractors, current and past. When not in use, hook the hydraulic line to a hydraulic top link.

Yes I have 2 remotes on my tractor that I could use to drive a splitter. I was hoping for faster cycle time, hence the PTO pump. I was also trying to keep the hydraulic oils separate to minimize contamination.

Anyone have experience splitting green Maple & Cherry?
Would a 27 ton splitter do the job on 24" diameter, 20" long rounds or should I get something bigger?

Looking at the Champion 27 ton:

Or if necessary, the 37 ton:

Only $300 difference in price but I'd like to go with the 27 ton since it has a 5 second faster cycle time than the 37.

Looking at the Champion 27 ton:
I just bought a Champion 27 and was splitting maple with rounds up to 30". Stood it vertical. Came down on an edge. If the split did not make it all the way through on the first spilt, we spun the log around to line up with the split line. Hit it again and viola, split in two.

Then we took the halves and split them into quarters.

Once all the big boys were broken into smaller pieces, we laid it flat and finished into fireplace size.

Did the Champion grunt a couple times? Sure... but it split it all.

For the price of the machine, I was pleasantly surprised. No rentals near so my plan is when I finish with my splitting of another tree, I may be selling this one with well less than 100 hours on it.

There is no reason for the 37. Our 27 has gone through every piece of wood we have tried for a few years now. Over 20 full cords so far with no issues

I have a 30 year old DURR 22 ton (probably manufactured by MDT under contract) .... IT splits anything I have including a 24 inch diameter dry OAK.... Oak fought back and actually came out of splitter explosive.. Yes it hurt.... IF a 27 ton wont split it you don't want to deal with it..... Only thing about going to a 30+ ton would be reliable if doing commercial wood lot duty... My new rule is about anything over 18 inches I do vertically till its more manageable to be done horizontally.... And the older you get, the less you worry about cycle time, those extra 5-10 seconds become important as micro rest periods...
