lHello all. I am trying to help my neighbor install braces inside her 5"x"5 Pvc fence posts. The issue (there always seems to be one when I offer to help...) is after I dug out all the trash the contractor shoved into each post, I found the bottom rails (ground level) are nowhere near centered (from left to right) where they meet inside of the post. its about a 30/70 (so about and inch and change and then 3"+ ) with no gap between them at all. The brace has to go down the center of the post. it would be a very major deal to try to slide all the rails along her property line over an inch, when only two posts need the inserts/braces. I only have access from the top of the post, basically 6feet above ground uld not find any type of saw extension, or even saw that would fit inside and be able to cut through a PVC rail that is about 6 inches of vertical height. the blades on wood pruning saws are too tall, as the rails are about two inches from front to back, so that leaves less than 1.5" on either side (front or back) for a saw blade to fit between the inside of the post and the rails. I will have to try to add a picture, or make a drawing, but I want to know if I can buy a saw extension or if I should just weld and two blades onto a 6ft piece of steel, and try that with an old sawzall. as always, thanks to all to try to help.

I think the inertia of a 6' extension would overcome the ability of a sawzall to function. Unless it were very light (aluminium?) but then you'd have issues with fastening the blade to it, and then flexing too much to be effective.

Hot wire maybe? Somehow...

I am wondering about that, but they can pull/ jerk pretty hard if the blade catches/ binds, so I would think they have some motor strength. I am surprised that I could not find any type of an extension, even if it was just a foot or so...

They make a tool to push down on the tabs that hold the rails in the posts. Basically 2 flat pieces of steel. This way you can pull out one 8 or 16’ section without having to move all rails.

You can then trim the rail to center it.

Are you trying to add the support for a gate?

I know pictures would have helped here, but this is a 6ft tall x 6ft wide privacy fence. the rails are too strong and short to flex/bow. so to remove them, you would normally slide one further into the post until it came out of the other and then angle/swing it clear of the other post and remove. I do not have that option as there is no room to slide them further into any of the posts (except maybe an end post quite a distance away). most of the bottom rails are now about an inch or so into the ground, so I would have to dig them free, and then the weight of all of the pickets would also make it difficult to slide the bottom rail. the fence is old by Florida standards, and to make matters worse, she bought the (more expensive tan, which has faded considerably from the Florida sun, so if anything would have to be replaced it would stick out like a sore thumb. not adding a gate, a section (exposed to an open area--so high wind load area) began to lean and the inserts will help prevent them from bending/kinking anymore at ground level. outside of Florida/ hurricane zone, these braces are/can be used as gate braces.
