Thanks again. I am not reseeding or doing much of anything with the lawn. Where I live, there is no irrigation, the soil is sand, the weeds are extremely aggressive, and nobody has a nice yard except for homes on small watered lots. I just want to keep the grass low and get rid of smallish brush in my yard and pasture.

The "lawn," if you can call it that, is just a couple of acres of bahia and oak leaves. The rest of the farm is 32 acres of pasture and woods. It rolls a little, but nothing most people would call a hill.

The Ironcraft FMH-160 looks pretty good. It has a hydraulic side shift and a 63" cut width. Ironcraft's site recommends it for 35-70 HP machines, but it doesn't say whether that's engine or PTO.

I contacted Ironcraft, and they say my tractor is underpowered for that mower, but they recommended the FRF-145, which is a ditch mower.

So maybe I should stay under 60".

I don't really need it to stand up vertically, but I would like to be able to do a small ditch.
The manual says to retract and stand it up while in transport mode (not mowing). It has a locking pin you should insert while it's vertical and moving. I use mine vertically along the fence lines and driveway on overhanging growth. It can get pretty high up then I go along with my pole saw to get the high stuff.

I have T&T cylinders and that comes in handy while mowing too. But yep, It's a lot of mower for a compact tractor. Novatractor has a 135 (53") and it's still a heavy mower. But it's been out of stock since I bought mine last year.

Since Leonz has chimed in, I would heed his advice. IMO, he is a top notch resource on this stuff.

Sure sounds like it. I'm grateful for all the input.

If I may tag along with additional questions, I have a L3901 hyrdo with loaded rear tires and would like to get a ditch bank flail mower soon, I keep going back to a 60inch from Mechmaxx but dont want to make the tractor too tippy. Anyone put a ditch bank mower onto a L3901 able to share some insight?

I run a 77" offset flail mower+ hammers with a 45hp gear tractor without much issue. It's a stationary offset. Not side shift. It's really solid for being a "cheaper" mower. I would recommend grass knives if all you are mowing is grass fields. The hammers do a good job too but takes more power to spin them.

Your mule is much too light in weight even with loaded rear tires
for a 60 inch boom mounted orchard and vineyard flail shredder.

Please visit both the DEL MORINO and MASCHIO web pages and take
the time to look at well designed rear views of the boom mounted flail
shredders illustrating various tractor model center lines being the center
of gravity when these flail shredders are operated with the boom fully
extended horizontally with a level mowing surface and the well illustrated
below horizon down angles that each mower is designed to reach in its
fully extended position as well as the fully elevated position with the
flail shredder extended outward mowing at an angle above horizontal
and at the 90 degree angle.

I must emphasize this next point greatly to you:

YOU must understand and visualize the following example

You are standing up holding a 16 foot long 2 by 6 and at the end of the 2 by 6
you have a 5 gallon pail of gear oil hanging on it with a couple of nails to hold
the bail in place and every movement forward or backward will be transmitted
to those 2 nails holding the pail in place.

You must understand that a boom mounted orchard and vineyard flail shredder
must be treated as an implement that has no over center control valve to slow it
inertia with its swing speed because the boom is offset and it is not mounted
rigidly to a single pivot point that does not and will not allow it to swing freely
in any direction or elevation.

You also need rear wheel weights and front wheel weights to counter and offset
the over center forces created by the flail shredder when it is moving in an
elevated position above the centerline/center of gravity of the mule you have.

I have attached both the Del Morino and Maschio flail mower brochures for
you to examine. You must read them carefully and completely and come
back to the forum and ask questions and go back and read the well written
descriptions and examine the operating widths below horizontal elevations
that these mowers will operate under and you will fully understand that a
60 inch boom mounted flail shredder OF ANY MANUFACTURE is much too
heavy to use on your mule.

Either of the Del Morino or Maschio 48 inch flail shredders will work for you
as long as you have wheel weights on the left side front and rear tires of your
L3901 mule.

I cannot emphasize enough to you that the physics involved in the right side
movement of a boom mounted orchard and vineyard shredder can and will
cause a tip over if the implement is too wide and heavy and you will be beyond
the point of yelling-

LUCY!!! YOU GOT SOME SPLAININ TO DO.

My l4060 (40hp) lifts & spins my Peruzzo Brush Bull 2200 (7.2', 1,500lbs) ok. It's a bit heavy for my machine, but works pretty well. 1,200 hours on the tractor, probably more than half are mowing. I wish I had the 20 extra HP of a L6060, but not enough to upgrade the tractor or get a smaller flail.

I'd probably recommend a 2000mm or 1,200lbs flail to somebody with my machine.

Something I've never needed or had a use for but I will state one thing and that is, out county uses fairly large New Holland cabbed tractors (I believe around 100 horses pto) for ditch bank mowing (guessing as I don't know much about New Holland tractors) but all of them have double cast centers on the left rear wheels and the few that don't, have an auxiliary outboard weight on the left side of the mower frame itself to stabilize the mowers when extended. There is nothing more butt puckering than a tippy tractor because with no suspension to speak of, a tippy tractor can quickly become a rolled over unit in a flash.
