Well I'm about to give up on determining what each package means. Prices are higher than I planned for and mission creep has set in. I initially had planned on getting a used truck, but I'm not a mechanic and our son that is a pretty good mechanic but is too far away to be much help and makes to much to bother with us on a routine basis so I don't want to go the used route.
I've presently got "leads" on 3 trucks and I'll probably go with one of them this weekend. I'll start another thread here in Trailers & Transportation.

You can select a new one being offered by a dealer and then click on the Window Sticker option which details are the standard items and optional add ons. A good start for things other than basic specs like length, width, height, weight, etc. For used trucks this is not an option unless something like Carfax is showing the original window sticker as an option for potential purchasers.

I realize it's a ball of worms in a pot of spaghetti, but I'm trying to find a truck online and be sure it's got my minimum requirements before I drive all over creation. I'm looking to compare specific things and dealing with some salespeople it's always "I'll have to look it up and get back to you" and they never do.
Does anyone have a good digital link?

With respect to salespeople, it was bad years ago, I'm sure it's much worse now with the purple haired freaks out there now.

I remember going into dealerships back in the 90's finding out that I knew much more than they did. When the Duramax came out in 2001 I went to a dealership asking about ordering one. The salesperson didn't know what the Duramax was and tried to sell me something off the lot. Either ignorant or lying.

I'm convinced they don't show everything on their website. I found lots of different options on Youtube that I couldn't find on Ford's site. It was just luck that I stumbled into the USA site and sort of discovered that what I wanted would be no longer available in 2025. The Canadian site still wasn't showing 2025 for more than a month later. I bought one of the last three suitable 2024 trucks in western Canada.

It is sometimes difficult to find what they are and what they include. I think there is a reason they change the packages every year.
That said, I think it is best to look at what features are available.....and what you want (what is a deal breaker if it doesn't have it) and only discuss price and deals after you know what you must have or will not tolerate if included. My dealer gets out a pad and writes down those features that I must have - as well as those I will not buy if included in the price of the truck.
I purchased a new Ram Laramie in 2018 (19 model), 2021 and 2025. None of these were on the dealer lot. One was transferred from Iowa and another from Mn. and another from another Missouri dealer.
If you get what you want and are happy with it, doesn't matter about the packages. Let the sales person hassle with that. With the 2019, the local dealer (one I use) had 250 on the lot. All had the 321 Rear end, not one had the 392 that I needed. So he found one for me.
That said, if you understand the packages, then that is great. But when you look at a new one, look for the features you MUST have. Best wishes, Larry And yes, I know that does not answer your question.. Hang in there.

I wish that the online truck configuration tools would show what both the payload and towing capabilities based on the options selected.

However, I also think they should maintain the configuration capacities by vin for at least 20 years so they can be looked up later.

Ram use to have one that went back to about 2017 when I got my 2020 2500 in 2022.

My last 2 truck purchases I knew more about the options than the salesman did. One was a 97 Ram that I had to order to get what I wanted. The other was a 2013 F150 STX 4x4. In 97 I had to get info from the credit union at work to find out about all the options. In 2013 I was shopping for a truck for 6 months when I found a deal online at a dealer not far away. $10k off msrp and everything I wanted including the 5.0, 4x4, and 3.73 elocker. It was also a just a step down from the max payload package and did not have all the junk I did not want or need. Yes I had done too much reading about packages. I could not pass that one up. I would look at the ford site and build options. One problem I have with the changes is the trucks weigh less that they used to with the aluminum body. It makes the GVWR completely useless when I do not know the weight of the truck. I typically drive a truck until it falls apart. My F150 is at almost 280k miles and still runs great. I do occasionally look to see what the manufacturers are doing. A lot of it I don't like. I'd buy my 2013 new again. I recently found out the 5.0 had that engine start/stop technology on some years. We had that on a rental car last year, and it drove me nuts. I had to press a button to turn it off every time I got in the car. I asked if there is a way to turn it off in the F150 and did not get a real answer. This is what I mean when my truck doesn't have all the junk I don't want or need. My current truck has the oil cooler, trans cooler, and the heavey duty cooling. I never worry about overheating. Last summer it was 110 here. No worries and no issues. The only complaint I have is the fan gets loud when it's hot outside. When I got my current truck the seat belt alarm was driving me nuts when I was driving across my land doing work. I'm not going across the field wearing a seat belt when I am getting in and out of the truck. The sales people at the dealer said there was no way to turn if off. I looked in the manual and the instructions were right there. That tells you how educated some of the sales people are. Have fun figuring out what they are loading you up with to make more money.
