Thanks for posting the diagram Tx Jim, I wanted a second opinion on which seals to replace, so from the part numbers on the diagram I ordered all of the o rings, valve spools and seats, and the two big rings that go on the rock shaft piston. I will pull the rock shaft housing which I have done many times on tractors, and replace these parts. I'm guessing this is a pretty easy repair. I still don't think that the leak that I can hear is what causes the hydraulics to get slow when the tractor is hot.

You're welcome
JD utility tractors built from '65-'92 have a long history of rockshaft control valve seals getting bry=ittle with age & leaking. If you can hear a hyd leak I'll bet that internal leak is contributing to poor hyd performance.

I'd like to think that with some thought on this someone can come up with specific tests so that Windy Hills can do more diagnosis without so much disassembly. Aren't there some pressure test ports?...
My guess is that a 55 series shop manual - or a special 55 series hydraulics manual - is going to be necessary - along with some pressure gauges.

There are several steps outlined/discussed in JD 2355 tech manual concerning diagnosing the closed center hyd system. I have in the past disconnected power steering supply line to determine if PS valve was causing hyd problem. A 5000 psi & 300 psi gauge will diagnose most of the hyd problems but a flow-rater is a higher priced better tool.

Before I buy pressure gauges or a flow rater, I think I will try it out with the new seals (which have not come in yet) and clean suction screen, cutting hay next week if the weather permits.

I will keep you posted when we cut hay.

Sorry for the delay. We had to wait to cut hay because of the weather. I put the new seals in and the hydraulics work great with no hissing sound.

Thanks for all of the help.

Congratulations on your successful repair of your tractors hyd system. Thank you for updating your thread as that may help future forum viewers.
