I saw a show today that was using the same type of expanding foam that comes in a can, except it was sprayed on with a commercial sprayer. The guys then used a sawzall with a 4 or 5' blade to trim the foam even with the studs. The stuff looked amazing, so i googled it and came up with "Tiger Foam" which is a kit that uses propane type bottles and is a self contained application unit that can be applied by the do-it-yourselfer like us TBN'rs. It boasts an R7 per inch!

My house will be log, but i will have several locations where this would seemingly work very well, such as the gables. Seems like a great way to insulate the inside of a block basement wall too. Any of y'all used this stuff, and if you did are you happy with the process and end result?

I've seen this used on This Old House and other shows. I wish I had used it on mine. However, budget has been tight and I didn't want to add additional expense. I heard later that it may not cost much more than conventional insulation. Too late to worry about it now, but, if I were to do this home construction thing again, I would at least get a quote for foam instead of just assuming it would be too expensive, as I did this time.

I very nearly used commercially applied foam when my woodshop was expanded and rennovated, but in the end two things stopped me. First was the cost, secondly they couldn't tell me whether or not the foam around the Metalbestos chimney flue would degrade from the heat. Looks like both of those issues have been addressed now, and I wish I'd have used it. Still, with 6" of conventional pink insulation my shop is the best insulated place in our entire house!

Pete:

This summer we had our farmhouse remodeled. It needed it and the insulation was sprayed in wet cellouse. It's as thick as the studs which just happen to be ripped boards 10" thick. They sprayed it in, let it dry and cut it even with the studs. Neat stuff.

Our house is all pegged together and made with wood from the farm, milled right on the property. It was a challenge for the builder to remodel to say the least. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Farmteck www.farmtek.com sells the foam in 20 pound propane like tanks with applicators.

When I first read this thread I started googling foam insulation since I have two projects coming up where I would like to use the stuff. I have a question that I hope that you or someone else reading this thread can answer. The web sites list the foam packages capacity in "board feet". How does that give you a feel for the volume you can fill?

Does the board foot measure refer to the initial coverage and the expansion ratio tells you how far "out" it expands? That was my first guess.

Any body know?

I wish I knew the cost because they swear this stuff is awesome. I saw it on this old house also and it looks excellent. I have conventional insulation and the cold air still finds a way when the wind blows hard enough.

I took a look at TIGER FOAM's web site- one offering is listed as 600 board feet ( square feet at one inch ) . Since a board foot is a measure of volume ( one sqare foot, one inch thick ) I would be inclined to think that this is the expanded, or end result, volume.
Certainly a very nice product, but due to the price I would have to look at "conventional" insulation for most applications

From the Tiger Foam supplier I found This which will allow you to figure how much you need.

That is a favorable comparision with fiberglass but meaningless since it does not state the R or U factors for each. Almost all pictures show filled stud cavities the cost would almost
astronomical.
