    Talk to me about chippers

No, not really. They're a waste of time. It'll take forever to get any significant amount of chips. If your goal is to have chips for paths, your best bet is to call local tree services and see if they'll dump chips at your place. If you're not near or on the way from where they're working...

    Newbie outrigger question

Perhaps I spoke too soon. I didn't think about this possibly being a 3 point backhoe. If it is, you do indeed need to be careful about lifting the tractor off the ground with it. It all depends what sort of attachment system it has.

I drove one for years. Most of them have the Cummins 6BT, same engine that's in my Dodge pickup, although I think the 91 would have probably had a Bosch rotary injection pump like the first gen Dodges. Newbie outrigger question

It's quite common and fine to get all four tires off the ground when using the backhoe. A little backhoe, like yours, just doesn't have the weight to keep it planted, even with the outriggers and bucket down. It's gonna drag itself around and you'll need to be careful about bending the...

How to straighten bent trailer tongue?

You can't straighten them and have it be structurally sound. Best thing to do (if the rest of the trailer is worth saving) is to cut the tongue off completely and build a new one.

The tow ratings on 1/2 ton trucks these days are very optimistic and seem to be based on towing in absolutely ideal conditions. Not sure what you mean by "tubes". Are you talking about the curl cylinders? If so, nothing keeps them in position relative to each other. It's not a big deal though. To reconnect the bucket, pin the loader arms on first, then do one curl cylinder at a time. I used to have an L35 that had a pin...

New Railroad ties used for structural support.

Depends where you are and the inspector you're dealing with I suppose. 2x4, 16" OC exterior walls meet code here, and that's with snow loads in excess of 70 lbs/sf. I've framed buildings in Ohio, Virginia, Missouri and Idaho and I can't recall ever seeing studs placed 12" OC.

Trailer rails are 76" apart, tractor with wheels is 82" wide - take wheels off?

I see. I was thinking main structural rails. I'm used to working with heavier duty trailers. I would call a couple rental places. Equipment trailers are fairly inexpensive to rent. Certainly less hassle and probably less cost than trying to get different wheels and tires for the tractor.

If it's being replaced with the same part you have to take the brackets off of the arms and then after removing the pins that hold it together the brackets just slide off that bar. If it's being replaced with tube, as I suggested, it can just be cut out.
  25. B

    Bar on loader

Its supposed to, but often doesn't due to the poor design. The steel tube behind it is part of the arms. The little bar is pinned to the brackets. The purpose is similar. That large tube keeps the arms rigidly connected and in line with each other. The little bar is supposed to keep the two...

Trailer rails are 76" apart, tractor with wheels is 82" wide - take wheels off?

The load does not need to be directly over the rails, unless you're trying to severely overload the trailer. Or are we talking about a trailer where the main rails are also the outside rails of the trailer? As in, the tractor is wider than the trailer deck?

New Railroad ties used for structural support.

It's very unusual to see a building with studs 12" OC, with any stud size. 10' 2x4 walls with studs spaced 16" OC are sufficient to support 33' trusses. That depends on the machine. Some of these little compact tractors have pretty flimsy loaders. Pulling from just one side, like @DarkBlack, mentioned, can cause twisting issues. Convert 70's tractor to quick attach plate, use original mount?

It'll work but you won't be able to roll back as far. Whether or not that's a problem depends on the attachments you get. I don't see bushings on that bracket though? Making your own brackets really isn't hard to do if you've got some basic fabricating tools.

True. To be honest, the thought never crossed my mind. That sort of stuff is a temporary bandaid fix, not a long term solution. I've built direct pin on forks for several tractors and that is the way I would go if on a limited budget or with a small machine where I'm trying to retain as much...

    Help Bending Metal Back

Again, there's no use pushing it back without fixing the broken weld.
  94. B

Why so much tongue weight on 22' car hauler trailers?

The weight a pickup can safely take on the hitch is significantly less than what it can take evenly distributed or centered in the bed. That's a big part of the reason that gooseneck trailers can haul so much more than tag trailers.
  95. B

Why so much tongue weight on 22' car hauler trailers?

True. The principle still applies though. Even if the trailer is at or lighter than the rated capacity of the tow vehicle (unlike the one in that photo), too much tongue weight can cause big problems.
  96. B

Why so much tongue weight on 22' car hauler trailers?

That depends. Too much tongue weight can cause the same kinds of problems as too little, with lack of steering also thrown into the mix. Here's an example I saw parked at Home Depot a while back. Toyota Tundra with a tandem dually trailer with concrete perma column posts loaded at the very front...

Why so much tongue weight on 22' car hauler trailers?

Or they could just not overload/improperly load the truck/trailer.
  102. B

Why so much tongue weight on 22' car hauler trailers?

If your headlights were pointed up because of tongue weight you had way too much tongue weight. That either means that you had the load too far forward or the load was too heavy for the pickup. The further back the axles are, the more stable the trailer and the more leeway you have in where the...

    Roof Ridge/Cap Wind Driven Leak

You're saying that the foam blew out from underneath the ridge cap? If it did, you either had an inferior product or a poorly installed one. If the vent foam is installed correctly, pinched between the ridge cap and the roof, the ridge cap would have to blow off in order for the foam to blow away.

  112. B

    Max tow weight confusion

I do tow a lot and you are correct. Only thing that may be off is the weight of the truck itself. They're often heavier than what the manual would indicate. 138. B

How to back up a pivoting axle trailer

Semi trailers can't be disconnected from the tow vehicle and hold up all of their weight on the wheels alone. They also don't have a tongue that steers a front axle. Those are the defining characteristics of a wagon.

How to back up a pivoting axle trailer

That's helpful, of course, especially while learning. It's not entirely necessary though. I've backed up wagons with a pickup. Watching the front wheels tells you the same thing that the tongue does, it's just not as dramatic.

    Truck Size to transport

What's the GVW of the trailer? Add that to the GVW of whatever trucks you're looking at. If the number is higher than 26,000, you need a CDL to tow it legally. Which means, if you don't have a CDL, you can legally tow a larger trailer with a 2500 than with a 3500.
