Min tractor size for repairing long gravel driveway with potholes?

The OP must have obtained the necessary information after 121 TBN posts. Time for him to just go buy a tractor, and see how it works out for him.

    Buying Used for Beginners...

I painted my rebuilt '51 8N about 35 years ago, but it is not so shiny now. It sits lonely looking in my barn, as I have two much newer tractors. 70 years old this year, and I will give it to one son, who will hopefully keep it until 100. It has a Sherman transmission too.

Min tractor size for repairing long gravel driveway with potholes?

The OP wants to buy a SCUT, and facts put forward here on TBN are seemingly unimportant. He needs to buy two (or maybe even 3) tractors! First, a tiny one called a SCUT, and then the following year a CUT (40 HP?) He needs to experiment with tractor buying to gain understanding of his needs. It...

    Advice on replacing JD4720

    Advice on replacing JD4720

I have the older than the M62 ( and slightly smaller ) Kubota L48 TLB. The M62 would seem to fit your desires perfectly! It is a built from the ground up, as a specific medium duty earth moving machine. Nothing else in the size/weight group compares! Be absolutely certain to get a hydraulic thumb!

    My tractor died UPDATE #2

You might consider buying a 500 amp battery load tester. I have 16 batteries, and at 80, I am too old to pull batteries, to haul them in for testing I just bought a Clore (brand) 500 amp load tester. Clore 500 amp carbon pile load tester = $70.86 on Amazon. Nice little unit.

I sold my dad's 1981 5 spd. Rabbit diesel pickup on E-Bay 2 years ago. Had very low miles, and brought a great price. Always garaged, condition was excellent! It sold for much more than I think he paid for it brand new. The 50 mpg. number is correct.

Sometimes it's worth it to hire a land surveyor

Of course you do realize that your steel T-posts are referred to as "witness markers", and are not recognized as legal boundary markers. If you had your surveyor set concrete bounds, they would be legal boundary markers, and another survey might not be necessary when the stakes rot away.

Buying Advice Buying backhoe with the tractor upfront.

It is true that backhoes are "designed for trenching", but there are MANY other applications! My Kubota (11' backhoe) TLB, with hyd. thumb, is most often used as my highly mobile portable crane. Owning a BH means it is ALWAYS at my immediate disposal, and I never remove it from my tractor! I...

Sometimes it's worth it to hire a land surveyor

It is an old descriptive term that seems to be only used in the Northeast US. I'll let Hay Dude explain.

Buying Advice Buying backhoe with the tractor upfront.

I need to remove an old landscaping tie wall. I could do it with my forks, but I think it will be much easier doing the job with my BH and thumb. New RR ties will be placed with my BH and thumb.

I agree with your assumption. Asphalt millings will become more difficult to re-work as they firm up over time. If you have a good solid base, millings are excellent.

Top Dressing Driveway - Gravel or Crushed Concrete

It depends on what you like. I don't care about having a smooth barefoot driveway, and it looks very nice in front of this ancient Cape Cod house. I used 3/16" x 4" x 16' pieces of steel edging that I made myself, 20 years ago when I re-did the driveway. I welded stubs of small angle iron on the...

Anyone here install their own septic

Good advice! I self designed/installed/inspected, back in 1986. I have a CE degree, and likely knew more about septic systems than any local inspector would. Infiltrators were not in use locally then, but they are a great design improvement!

My 2006 Kubota L48TLB (48HP) is certainly no homeowner tractor. It is an intermediate size contractor beast, and....I am only a homeowner. I do not plow snow either! I am old, and go to Florida for the Winter.

Pat's Easy Change Adjustment bolt size on Pat's Easy Change and a short introduction for a new member

The Pat's are apparently all shipped with grade 2 bolts. I changed mine to grade 5 as suggested above. Grade 5 bolts are less likely to fail, and are still easy enough to remove if broken. I would not use grade 8 bolts for this application.

Any idea who made this grappler

Can you tell for certain from the picture, that the "wear area" is only 3/8" thick material? The low priced grapple that I bought has 5/8" wear area steel. Mine is 60" and weighs exactly 500 lbs. With my 48HP TLB, I doubt that I can actually abuse it.

Very difficult to grow corn here! Sandy soil, requiring daily watering, thus breeding bugs/corn borers and sometimes fungus.
  175. F

Any idea who made this grappler

That is a light duty grapple that someone has abused. I can certainly be repaired. I bought a new $1200 grapple without greaseable pins, and changed the pins to brass, then drilled and tapped them for grease zerks. If the greased brass pins should ever wear, they can easily be replaced.
