    Starting my bridge!!

What weekend do you guys wanna come down and play??:) No progress will be made this weekend. Family voted to stay at “home” due to weather (cold and crappy here and at the farm) and the 1000 things that can/should be done here. Loving all the input/drawings/etc from you all. I’ve come...

That’s the plan. Using rebar and skipping the cable. Posted this pic I scribbled a couple pages ago

  4. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Is more always better? Would 3/4” rebar make my truss better? The conversations you guys have are fascinating to me. Of course in the construction world engineers/architects can sometimes be the death of us tradesman…….. I once napkin doodled a drawing for a contractor whose architect didn’t...

    Starting my bridge!!

So far I’ve got $200ish invested Maybe another $500 in concrete Another $200 in steel….maybe A couple nice days working outside Bringing something “in”…..trailer/connex/etc is gonna require MONEY…….we are currently building another structure on-site. The bridge is something to keep me busy...

    Starting my bridge!!

    Interesting……thanks!
  8. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Thanks for the compliments! If can’t eliminate deflection……it’ll be foot traffic and ATVs only. I’m mostly doing this as a test and the experience for myself. I know safety comes first.
  9. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Of course there will be more photos!
  10. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Just keep pounding pieces of rebar till hard pan? Hard pan can’t be more than 4-5’ deep by me. We don’t even use septic systems with leech fields……ground doesn’t perc. 8-10 should be good? Skip the post hole digging to make concrete “anchors”? Different ideas are always welcome! Won’t be...

    2x6 tubes are vertical
  12. D

    Starting my bridge!!

11’ x3’x18” deep slab Post hole digger down approx 3’ in 2 or 3 spots as “anchors” Concrete will encase approx 4” of the 6” tall tubes. Rebar welded to tubes at various points and welded to some bar in the slab
  13. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Gonna weld a 4x4x1/4” chunk of tube to a 2x6 tube. 4000 with mower and loader 1500 pounds…….most likely not
  14. D

    Starting my bridge!!

There will be concrete abutments guys.
  15. D

    Starting my bridge!!

2x6 tubes are 1/8” wall. Outside tubes have a piece of 3x3x3/16 -20’ welded to them for the 3x3 cross tubes to sit on There’s another 2x6 tube in the center under the 3x3 tubes Tractor weighs approx 4000 pounds I’m going to build this under each of the stringers out of 5/8 rebar. An...

    Starting my bridge!!

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. No progress since a couple weekends ago. The bridge isn’t at our full time residence. We are going this weekend. I’ll (hopefully) be making some mock-ups for the bridge decking and driving one wheel of the tractor and pick up on them to see how the...

    Starting my bridge!!

Re:cables Flat stock “sandwiching” the tube 1/2 or 5/8” bolts with spacers top and bottom Bottom bolt would have cable looped thru……no welding on ends. Center spacer is cut from a 4x4x1/4” tube approx 3” long….allowing a good weld from above on both sides. Flat stock I can get. I could...
  18. D

    Starting my bridge!!

This is my last resort. I have another bridge with poles/cross bracing/etc in the center. I’m trying to see if it’s possible not to use them.
  19. D

    Starting my bridge!!

A cable under tension bowed down (4 or 6”) in the center should?
  20. D

    Starting my bridge!!

This is why we love this place!! I have multiple 50’ lengths of 3/8 crane cable (not aircraft cable). 5k capacity turnbuckles aren’t hard to get…..that’s where my cable idea came from. The rebar/flat stock idea work for me as well……overhead welding isn’t my strong suit so that’s why I was...

  22. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That’s concrete humor? I actually have 40’ (4-10’ pieces) of U shaped 22 or 24 gauge sheet metal shrouds for some coiling doors.
  23. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That pesky “hiring” word……. My neighbor has a couple excavators but I hate imposing. The chute idea isn’t bad……. I do have a teenage boy with friends and some wheel barrows.
  24. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Nothing new…… Except the churning in my brain!! Most likely will put a concrete abutment on both sides. Rough math says approx 1-1.5yd should give me what I want. Getting it to the other side is my big challenge. Trying to figure where else to put more concrete. Minimum with no cartage is 3yds...

  28. D

I plan on a railing/guardrail of some kind.
  29. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Results…… Started with a bit of a crown….approx 1/8” I’d say there’s an 1/8” between the string and the 2x4. 1/4” sag. I have some 3/8 crane cable….I may make a “u” under each stringer and use a turnbuckle to “arch” the bridge
  30. D

    Starting my bridge!!

Welding is done!!! Gonna set a string line on one side. Throw some boards across and park both ATVs right in the middle and measure deflection……stay tuned

Thank you sir!! Cut and notched 4 of the 6 cross tubes last night. Cross tubes are on 2.5’ centers Laid those 4 out this morning…..looking like a bridge!! Gonna cut and notch the last 2 now. Waiting till after 8 to fire up the welder
  33. D

    Starting my bridge!!

That’s about it for today! Level-ish Square-within 3/4”-hard to square big things solo I’ve got 6 more cross pieces to cut/notch/weld Then the deck……might do steel tubes flat where the tractor/truck drive and than wood for the rest

    Starting my bridge!!

I agree. Budget doesn’t allow for it currently…..so far I’ve got $180 in the 6x6. When they pour the slab for the new barn I may order an extra yard or 2 and fill around the beams

ATV/Riding Mower bridge using materials laying around...request thoughts

I’ve considered doing something similar with 1/4 or 3/8 aircraft cable and 2 short pieces of tube steel if the bounce is too much. I have most of the materials on hand. I know you can buy everything at Rural King/Farm and Fleet/etc

I just deal with the debris. So far no “structural” issues As far as bouncing….. I’ve got another bridge-same length-approx 3’ wide just for foot traffic. It’s is a bit bouncy……..I always comment to people……how many bridges do you have?

12'h x 16' w Roll up door vs panel door

A high lift or vertical lift door requires a jack shaft opener. “normal headroom” uses a trolley operator. There are some cases where a jack shaft can be used……we try hard to not get stuck in those situations. A local car dealership has normal headroom doors going above a drop ceiling. The...

Good to see someone knowledgeable about doors!!! Rytec is probably the “Cadillac”!of high speed doors. We’ve been doing alot of Hormann/Flexon high speeds lately. Long term I don’t have an opinion yet…….short term is promising.

Building a barn to live in- interesting article

No it does not. Star was there when we bought the place. Might be a manufacturers logo? Our daughter wants to name the place “Wildstar Farms” because of the star.

Building 55' Bridge Across Creek - Utility Poles

I used 2/3 boiled linseed oil 1/3 turpentine. Mixed in a 5 gallon bucket and brushed on. 2 coats so far, probably used a gallon total for my bridge. Approx 30’ long with handrails.

    GPS smart fence dog collar

We are expecting an Aussie pup this year. I’ve been doing a lot of research in the Spot On GPS system. it’s not cheap but appears well reviewed. One feature I like is the ability to have multiple “yards”. We currently have 2 homes. One suburban sized .25ish acres The farm is 12 acres.

Anyone out there Have a Mini-Split Heat/Ac unit?

We have two in our bardominium. I believe 12,000 b great for A/C and very quiet. The heat part……not so great! we had quite a cold winter and a couple space heaters were needed a few times. humidity control can be problematic

    L2501 I love it BUT

I have an L2501 with the RCR1260 bush hog. some of my fields get about 4’ tall. Not real thick but she cruises right along. I do have one spot where the grass is really thick and even at 12” tall I can feel the tractor “working” but it doesn’t really slow down. I run my grinder on the cutting...
