Outstanding Young People, Do You Know Any?

Thanks! Yeah, I want to help this kid anyway I can, other than bringing him wood to kiln and paying for his service. He is facing an uphill battle in a business like this with narrow margins, but it is obvious he loves it and he deserves to be successful. I plan on getting the word out in as...

Outstanding Young People, Do You Know Any?

I have been running the sawmill strong for a couple of weeks and I got a nice pallet load of shelves that I need to get to the kiln. Luckily I found a kiln 7 minutes from where I work. The guy who runs it is named CJ, I talked to him a couple times over the phone to get some info seemed like a...

Who still drives a stick in 2025?

Our last manual vehicle was our 2017 Jeep Renegade. My wife insisted on getting a manual. When that got totalled in an accident about a year ago it just didn't make sense to get another manual vehicle. Very hard to find nowadays.

I got REALLY lucky and scored a nice haul of flame box elder. A lot of the flame is in the last 4 inches of the log but if you slice it up right you get some beautiful boards.

Yes, I think this is the best option. I might chunk it into 3-4' sections for them for easier loading. But yes, I think the rule might have to be no one runs a saw except me. 15-20 was a bit of an overestimate, I just counted only 11. But still @ponytug thanks for the feedback I did not...

Got my sawmill up and running!!! TIME TO MILL!!!

Reflections of a fledgeling sawmiller. Things are really ramping up nicely at the mill. My first goal is to mill shelves for the house. I want lots of nice chunky floating shelves. So far we have 2x12 red oak slabs, and some 1.5x11.5 black walnut slabs cut. This week have 2 nice white oak...

Recommendations for WARM / insulated coveralls?

    Installing Generator Under Covered Porch?

That is an excellent point!! Doesn't seem worth it in the case of a what if situation like that. As often as we need it (almost never) maybe just rolling it out and plugging it in is the better play.
  45. H

    Installing Generator Under Covered Porch?

Yeah I was thinking about that. The porch is exterior but the crawlspace encompasses that entire half of the house. I was also thinking about sound and possibly might need to create a sound deadening housing for it. Then I would definitely need a fan to introduce cooling and combustion air.
  46. H

    Installing Generator Under Covered Porch?

Good idea? Bad Idea? I understand there would have to be some special concessions made for this to work right, but I think it is possible. I understand the exhaust will have to be piped outside the block wall. Maybe a fan to help move air over the engine to help with cooling I have a larger...

Anyway to the OP take this is consideration. Our house is not very big and this time to tap is an issue. If you live in a big house or in a colder climate it could get much worse. I have since installing mine done more digging and lots of people have it much worse than we do. These things...

    Propane tankless water heater

I feel like there has to be something not setup right causing this. Even the sink that is literally 4 feet from the heater takes 40 seconds to get hot. So I am hoping we can figure out the issue and make it hit the taps in less time.
  63. H

    Propane tankless water heater

There is a valve in the pump that senses temperature in the line. The pump turns on at 85 deg and turns off at 105 degrees. The excess water is pumped back into cold supply line. Yes, that is what I was thinking, if the tank/tanks were centralized this would help that. I have to figure out...

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Yessir! The T that is to the right of the cinderblock will be accessible, that is where I plan on putting a clean out. As far as the vertical to the horizontal I will easily be able to reach my arm down there to make that turn. I am not super worried about that underground section clogging at...
  109. H

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Yeah, I totally get it. I can get rigid 6". But that stuff is EXPENSIVE as are the T's. I think they are $70 just for a T. But that might be a better way to do this. And I don't need a ton of it. I feel like with the strainer and the short underground run clogs won't be as much of an...
  110. H

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Well I will have a strainer on the end. But really not that much will come that way. The water moves in sheets and doesn't bring a lot of material with it. What does come that way will be caught by the stainer. I will walk by that strainer numerous times a day so when it gets leaves in it I...
  111. H

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Oh yeah, also I was thinking of using concrete to fill the closed end of the T I am not using. It is hard to see from the pic but the 90 I am using to turn the vertical to horizontal has that closed end of the T pointed down allowing a place for water to pool. I plan on filling that void with...
  112. H

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Yeah, I see your point. But that is all I could find locally for 6" corrugated. Luckily the upstream intake end will allow easy access to the underground short run. And there will be ample slope to all of it, I am hoping that will keep there from being too many clogging issues.
  113. H

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

Unfortunately the 6" is corrugated. I already had it, and I am not sure where to get the smooth walled corrugated locally. Can you tell me the disadvantage of using corrugated?

    Drainage - The Final Chapter

So I have one more drainage task I need to get done before the winter rains arrive in the southeast. I need to backfill around the back door of my addition. This is a special challenge because LOTS of water, comes to this point. Essentially the entire half of our lot to the right of the...

Whether it is right or wrong the main response I have seen to this disaster is a mostly grassroots effort. People from the surrounding areas driving in with donated goods. So @dstig1 has talked me into the soft close metal framed variety, made by Johnson. I stopped at HD and got 3 of them at on my way home. Well I went with the wood prebuilt ones, I feel like they are stronger. And I am on a bit of a time crunch they seem easier to install. I did not go with the soft open and close. Just one more thing to screw up, although it was VERY tempting. All 3 of these doors will be in our master suite...

    Pocket Door Question

Sorry, swinging doors just won't work for my application. I will be the one hanging any pictures, so iff that happens I have no one to blame but myself.
  143. H

    Pocket Door Question

Nope, 2x4 is adequate, thus the need for the crazy frames.
  144. H

    Pocket Door Question

I suppose it is an option. The only reason I don't like those is then the entire side of the wall is useless for anything else. Can't put anything on floor, can't hang anything. Aso that will definetely not work between closet and bathroom, could work in wall between BR and closet.

I have a central heat pump system in my exiting house, all heating and cooling for that portion of the house is accomplished with that system. I want to add an addendum to my previous post. I am not defending cock fighting. I do not think it should be legal per se. It is indeed quite brutal and not really enjoyable to watch. But lots of cultures view things very differently than we do in the good ol US of A. What we see as brutal...

They will allow it here in Tennessee. I just removed the whole side of the house to add the addition.

Siding Screw Up, What would you do?

That is the only bright side here. I will more than likely re-side the 10” reveal asbestos on the old part of the house when we install new windows. When I do it would have to be 7” to match the fire side. The garage was sided 4 years ago. Hope I never have to put new siding on it.

There was no signed contract. I haven’t paid a dime yet. How does a signed contract help my negotiating power?

I am serving that role in this case. And I will live with this faux pas the rest of my life. I’m not going to ask for a 50% discount but I think a bit of reimbursement if fair. If they had to pull it all down and put it back up it would have been an extra day of labor he would have had to pay.
