Are you against using non-crimped fittings? I've used the field serviceable fittings a number of times for making the exact custom length hose without having to order or go anywhere. A touch of oil on the fitting/hose before assembly and they go together pretty easily...

not sure if this would be related, but I had a Yanmar SC2450 that had the same issue. For that one it was a check valve inside the transmission. It was a known issue for them as the check valve had a bad run of parts. Wondering if you maybe have a gummed up check valve that is stuck open maybe?
