12 States to ban diesel vehicles

When I had a '80 Peterbilt, insured as an RV and used as one but couldn't get it registered as such in CA, they wanted me to spend $20K on an exhaust system for it. That would've bought me four years of compliance, for about the same as I had paid for it few years earlier. Ended up registering...

I'm not "most", but not only do I not want an EV, if I had one it would be useless around here. I could go somewhere in one, just not make it back home again...and that's not even counting wintertime EV range degradation. But it does look like I am in the "most" group when it comes to EV sales...

12 States to ban diesel vehicles

Hah, that reminded me of another politician/trial period scenario. My native country was LH traffic, but they had been smart enough to prepare for converting to RH. The decision to switch kept getting delayed. When it was finally close to being decided on, one brilliant politician suggested...

No, a postal Jeep I converted to 4WD. And I recently sold a RHD Jeep JK. Funny that you mention Land Rover and putting yourself yourself in the center. The prototype Land Rover had the steering wheel in the center and seating on each side of the driver's seat. It was largely a copy of the...

The only thing strange with a RHD to me is that when towing it was harder to keep the trailer's tires by the white line on a curvy road. Would've thought it'd be easier, but nope. And that was obviously not with my KEI pickup, but another RHD vehicle of mine.

What is good in trailer tires?

The speed rating is another reason I like the Venom tires. Mine are M rated, which is cutting it very close, but that's better than L or less.

What is good in trailer tires?

I've been impressed with the Venom tires. They're all-steel construction, much like a mini commercial tire, and are easy to balance. Didn't put them on the horse trailer since they deserve the smoothest ride possible. That one should ideally have bias ply tires on it, but it's hard to find...

Trailer warning, this could happen to you

I don't get too hung up on the wire colors. They can vary from trailer to trailer. Where it can get tricky is when going from commercial 7-pin round to 7 flat, and that's because the brake and turn signals are separated on the commercial side.

I just finished grading (after removing up to eight inches of dirt) in three spots, maybe a 1/4 acre in total. Or about 20 loads in my 16' dump trailer. There were times when I managed to distort the thin material of the clip, but it was easy enough to make them work again. These days I have better anchor points (like QRTRHRS) and haven't had any issues. I still have and use my first ratchet straps from the early '90s. They must have several...

Oh, it's no big deal to swap the links. Don't do it often anyway. Although, more often than the excellent side link I bought from you. And I did run a diverter valve for a while, to operate the steering on the axle on my home grown Frankenblade - now a towable 3-way blade.

Ah, I use hydraulic top links so I basically forgot that there's another version. I shouldn't have, since with the rear blade on the M6040 I have to use the stock link, because all three remotes are in use with that blade. But since the top link can only be a certain length for the blade's...

    Utility Trailer for Subcompact Tractor

On the flip side, with a rental you'll have no idea how many times the tires have been curbed, what shape the wheel bearings, brakes, etc. are in. If something goes wrong with my trailers I only have myself to blame, which I much prefer.

    Reclaiming Gravel.

I have run my somewhat heavy (1,600 lbs.?) rear blade backwards if the driveway only needs a touchup, but for getting gravel back to the surface the 8' land plane is my weapon of choice. And I don't necessarily run either one with the 3-point all the way down.

Used to very strict annual inspections, before arriving in the USA I expected the road sides littered with broken down vehicles here. Utility Trailer for Subcompact Tractor

I'm definitely not arguing that. Yet I've sold more of them in the past few years than I have bought. And it doesn't bother me if the trailer is larger/more capable than it needs to be. Sometimes it's just right, even if the load weighs way less than what the trailer can support.
  33. T

    Utility Trailer for Subcompact Tractor

I would add one suggestion to that, based on experience. Get 5,200-lb. axles instead if the trailer will see more than occasional usage. After having to replace axles three times on a light trailer that never had more than 3,000 lbs. on it, I will never use 3,500 lb. axles again. Granted...

It's the other way around for me, with the tractor able to lift 2,000+ and the skid steer is supposedly only good for 1,500 (never really lifted anything but tree branches with it). Also opposite, for snow removal I run an 8' front blade and a 9' rear blade from the comfort of the heated cab...

I try to not even turn with the skid steer, to keep it from tearing up the driveway, grass, whatever it's on, let alone run circles with it. I'm not good at having only one...not at all. Maybe some day somebody will invent a machine that can do most everything well, but until then I'll have multiples of several things. Heck, with four backhoes I still don't have one that's great once outside its particular strengths.

Alright, with a small tractor and a more capable skid steer that makes sense. In my case, the M6040 can lift much more than the NH L218 can. It's not 10 times the machine, but maybe about twice.
  62. T

Skidder or Tractor? If you could only have one.

Hmm. Mine sure couldn't. On the other hand, my tractor seems to be able to do anything the skid steer can. Except to run the snow blower.
  63. T

Skidder or Tractor? If you could only have one.

My skid steer is lowest on the usefulness list of the machinery I have. It was bought to run the snowblower, because that's what the 'blower was made for, but there's very little I like about it.

PTO Shaft to Gearbox Bolts Keep Breaking!

Using the comparison to lug nuts again, it's not the fasteners that keeps the wheels secure. It's the resulting clamping force between the wheels and hubs that does the job. Sure, untorqued lug nuts would keep the wheel from falling off...but not for all that long.
  76. T

PTO Shaft to Gearbox Bolts Keep Breaking!

As mentioned earlier, it looks like the bolts have been "rattling" in their holes, until they give up due to the shear forces. Work hardened if you will. I don't think it's one "shear force incident", but repeated abuse from not being tight.
  77. T

PTO Shaft to Gearbox Bolts Keep Breaking!

Not a great comparison, but if you only snugged your lug nuts down, breakage would follow. Based on the photos, those bolts have taken some serious shear forces.

Aside from the mounting method, I think you'll find that the tractor is too light to do any meaningful digging with. Except maybe in sand. That statement is based on using a BX25D to clean out irrigation ditches, digging a cat grave in topsoil, and some other light tasks. It's not lacking in...

I would pay to avoid "free" oil changes at a dealer. Have forfeited about a dozen of them. I'm definitely not confusing the two. Thankfully my batteries as good enough to turn the engines fast enough to build pressure. Not that I can monitor it on the gauges while cranking, but on the 3.6 V6s it's easy enough to hear the difference when starting them. They're noticeably quieter...

Additives can fall out of suspension, and the oil itself can get condensation in it. That's about all that can happen to stored oil as far as I know. Then again, I do remember seeing The Motor Oil Geek showing old oil that wasn't exactly good after a while.

I have plenty of bumps and holes, but with an M-series tractor (large diameter tires) and a 10' mower it's both reasonably comfortable and quick. When using the L3800, obviously with only a 6-foot mower, I have to go a lot slower, mostly because of the dinky front tires.

It also matters where those plies are. A radial may have several in the tread area but only a few in the sidewalls. That's one reason I like bias ply tires - a stouter tire and generally for a lower price. That they don't tend to experience tread separation because of age is another plus.
