Your comment sounds like you’re making a universal statement about tier 4 tractors. Mine only regenerates every 70 hours and only for about 15 minutes. I’m suggesting that some companies do a better job with the technology than others and it’s not a one size fits all situation.

Question for those who live in California

Yep. $100/300K is far more than the cost of repair/replacement of vehicles. And it’s not hard to max out the medical payments for a serious injury.

Question for those who live in California

Yes. But it’s a lot more than vehicle replacement and often higher than dwelling replacement. And it gets really expensive when the other party claims medical.

Stihl or Echo top handle saw?

Echo and Husky also make pro saws. My local Stihl dealer works on any brand of small engine equipment. He actually replaced the engine in my old Echo wheeled string trimmer last year with a Honda engine.

The companies classify them that way. They are listed as such in their catalogs. Largely the materials that the head, piston, rings, and other components are constructed with. Pro saws also have a higher percentage of replaceable parts. Your large Stihl saws are pro saws.

Stihl or Echo top handle saw?

You are seeing the difference between a consumer and pro grade saw. Pro grade saws are far more sturdy and the brands we are discussing all offer pro saws. The problem with looking for a used pro saw is that loggers and arborists use them hard and don’t part with them until they are worn out...

I have always been happy with Stihl pro saws, and the loggers in the west seem to favor them. That said, I have other types of Echo equipment and like their products a lot. I don’t think you can go wrong with either brand or a Husky in the pro grade series.

Question for those who live in California

It’s true that there will not be a running crown fire for many years after a high severity fire, but these areas can reburn if they regrow to heavy brush. Or even burn as a grass fire, but the severity obviously wouldn’t be as much compared to a high density forest crown fire.

Question for those who live in California

Wind is tough and changes the game. But that’s why indirect control lines are built sometimes miles from the fire front. By burning out and holding that line, your effective fuel break can be a half mile to a mile wide. Fires are stopped by black ground and no more fuel to burn.

Question for those who live in California

A little bit of wildfire behavior is necessary to unravel the story. I need a new lawn mower!

I bought a Stihl last year with full suspension. I really like it, but it’s just a re-painted/rebadged Ferris mower. There are more Stihl dealers and service facilities than Ferris so that’s why I went that route.

    death of regular cab pickups

I agree. For most uses the independent front axle is better. My Wrangler’s solid front axle does reflect in the ride and it’s a quirky but fun vehicle overall. My truck is much more practical. But driving the Wrangler is a hoot and makes me smile whenever I climb aboard. An old guy’s toy.

Neither the Gladiator or Wranglers are uniframe. They are both body on frame straight axle vehicles. Some of the last. And they ride like it too (I have a Wrangler).

    death of regular cab pickups

Yeah, I remember the gas tank behind the bench seat of the regular cab. About all you could fit behind the seat was maybe a jacket, rifle, or shotgun. Nothing more. Everything else either went in the bed or bed toolbox if you had one. I don’t miss those trucks.

I have a 2500 Dodge and no need for another truck. But the Jeep Gladiator trucks are awesome for their intended purpose. They are outdoor recreational vehicles, not work trucks, and are perfect for off road and jeep trail hunting access and retrieving a deer or elk from the backcountry. Or...

You need to look at machines with 4 wheel suspension. Two I’m familiar with are the Ferris and Stihl machines.

Or you could buy a Ferris/Stihl ZTR with 4 wheel spring suspension. These are pretty smooth riding on rough ground.

    Clearing weeds in driveway

Pre-emergent herbicides prevent seed germination and it works for most species. It won’t do anything to perennial plants that are already established on that site such as grass roots and perennial weeds that were mowed without herbicide application. Also, whatever you spray, use a dye so you can...

Leaving MMM pinned up in winter and plowing.

I was envisioning this. Hung up on snow pack and lots of hand shoveling underneath to get free.
  141. jyoutz

    Tiller for GC

If the tiller width is close to your tire spread, get one that offsets. That way only the last row will have a tire track. And Woods tillers are fantastic. I had one for 22 years before selling it because it was too small for my current tractor.

  143. jyoutz

    Clearing weeds in driveway

Glyphosate only affects green growing plants. If you want to keep weeds from germinating you need to use a pre-emergent herbicide. That will prevent seeds from sprouting. Or just mow like others have suggested.

Pines have a high tolerance for different soil ph. We have the same species of pines growing on alkaline limestone soil, and semi-acidic soil. Pine needles are mildly acidic. Ultimately blueberries need acidic or at least neutral soil to thrive. It’s hard to continually amend soil ph, so they...

    Blueberries

Blueberries love acid soil, so pine needles would be better than bark, but I would think that any conifer tree residues would add a bit of acid. And then it could be unnecessary if your soil is already on the acid side. I can grow raspberries but not blueberries because my soil is a bit alkaline...
