Exactly what I did when I bought a new PTO shaft several years ago.

When I built my ballast box (a metal 55 gallon barrel) I put 2 3" PVC Pipes capped on one end with glue and the other the caps (rain caps) on top are lose. I use that as a place to store shovels and other tools as needed when using it. I left a little at the top for a length of chain.

I often dig 12" holes for our fruit trees when planting them. I go down and if I want a slightly larger diameter hole I ease forward and backward a few inches. This wallows out the hole achieving the softening up the soil for the new plant/tree.

From my old FFA days, you take a stick about as long as your arm. Hold it at 90 degrees from your body, walk backwards until the top of the stick is equal to the top of the tree. From there use a measuring tape to get the number. Or as we do walk off an approximate yards length and do the math.

What seems to work for me. I put the attachment on and then last thing is the PTO shaft. If it isn't lined up, I lift it and that usually allows me to slightly turn the pto shaft and get alignment.

Cutting is fine, it is a bit heavy and has a spring loaded flip latch. Designed so that if it hits something too solid it will flip back, or forward depending on which direction its pointing to. I had to tweak/tighten the trigger and not sure if its right just yet. I only use it for trimming...

Our last frost date is around April 15th. These were planted from seed and put in the ground mid April or so best I remember. Unless the squash bugs get em they will produce until mid October (our first frost date is the 15th).

Looks kinda like root rot. Its a disease and if so you will most likely loose the plant. But could be caused by excess watering or runoff from a roof for example. If its spreading it appears you may lose that plant, time will tell.
