A quick hitch is the first thing that I add but also a 10 foot chain of 5/16 4700# test is the handiest tool in the cab. And a pair of cotton gloves to wipe off the ends of hydraulic couplers before engaging.
I think what will do you best is a box scraper with wheels. The wheels hold the machine level so that it fills in the low spots (and cuts the high spots). The 3 PT machines are OK (I own them all) but I use the box scraper the most.

A friend needs a loader for his JD 5400 and has found a 542 loader that has mounts for a 5420? Any idea where to find drawings? Any ideas? Anyone done it?
