\"00\" starting problem

Having problem starting the critter. Battery is charged, and connections are clean; battery, ground, and starter. Upon turning the key it would not turn over fast enough. Just a slooow rrrrr......rrrrrr.

Now I graduated to only one weak rrrrrr. I didn't have this problem until I tried to start it at 30 degrees. Yesterday was 40 out and it started right up twice. Today I even plugged in the block heater, but made no difference.

Any suggestions of what to do next? Thanks.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

Sounds like a bad battery. Take the battery to a auto parts store and let them load test it. Just take one bad cell in freezing temp to zap it.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

I have a load tester. The battery is right up there.

If the battery's OK, then check your ground wire. Until I did some scrapping and tightening I would get nothing.(You may have already done this, I'm not sure). Worth a try though. Let us know. BobG in VA

Re: \"00\" starting problem

Yeah...all connections were cleaned. Today I plugged it in for 4 hrs, and it started right up. Then it would start up fine all afternoon. Warm engine I'm supposing.

It, at the present time, definitly seems related to the temp. upon starting. Perhaps some connection, (in the starter ?), is not making contact when it is cold.

Dealer said he would send a new starter if it persists.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

MP, If your battery is producing full voltage under load, take a voltmeter and see how much voltage you have at the starter (after the solinoid). If it is at ar near the battery voltage under same load, I would say the starter is bad. If you have more than a few tenths of a volt drop, find were it is and fix it.

Are you talking about the ground wire that attaches to the solinoid?

I am getting nothing - not even a click - have cleaned and tried to recheck everything. Is there a relay and if so a way to check it? I noticed on the wiring diagram a 10a fuse in line to the relay that glows the glow plugs.

Have checked to make sure I'm in neutral as well.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

I would think your glow plugs is the problem what kind of tractor you have.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

has the tractor ever been ethered? We had an N14 Cummins that exhibited the same behavior once. Turns out the bendix in the starter was bent from somebody over-ethering the motor. Just barely though. You could put the starter on a bench and it would work fine. Throw a load on it and it would grind like a low battery as it grounded out.

Re: \"00\" starting problem

Ain't no glow plug in the 00 series. They are direct inject. I understand there is a feul "warmer" (my term) but these engines do not have the typical manifold glowplug. Sounds like the solenoid to me, especially if you can jump it straight to the starter. BobG in VA
