'06 Silverado 2500HD Tow Hitch Upgrade

I extended the wire harness on a 2003 GMC to mount a 7pin receptacle in the truck bed for a gooseneck trailer. The local trailer parts store had a variety of these adapters. The one I used had a plug the went into the truck harness and another that went to the back of the original receptacle. It had a 5 or 6 ft. cable that went to the new receptacle in the bed. I don't remember the exact price, but it seems like it was $40-$50.

That's encouraging to know. Gives me hope that something back there is standard enough such that I can fit it with an aftermarket 7-pin socket in place of the funky GM/Pollak socket without a lot of cutting and splicing.

Well, the solution was finally found. After looking everywhere I could think of, I finally contacted Pollak technical support by phone and was told that the GM "twist-in" socket can be directly replaced by the regular 2" round one with four screw holes they make for Ford: Pollak Part No. 11-893. The round harness-to-socket plug is the same. This Ford socket can sit in any universal 2" bracket and Pollak's bracket: Part No. 12-711U.

Two minutes later while searching the net for those Pollak parts (and finding them on eBay), I found the following confirming post in an RV forum:

"When I installed the XDR I purchased two Pollak parts to replace the electrical socket. The new socket is a P/N 11-893 which mounts to a P/N 12-711U bracket. I attached the bracket to the lower side of the bumper about 11" left of the vehicle centerline. The existing plug which terminates the factory wiring harness plugs directly into the Pollak P/N 11-893 socket. I obtained these Pollak parts from a local truck accessory dealer."

Now why couldn't I find that post before???
