I also use craftman have 3/8 3/4 1/2 use 3/8 most of the time.Got 3/4 for brush cutter&back blade.& 300 utility before my bota.

I think 1/2" sockets are pretty deep on their own, but do have a set of deep sockets for the impact wrench. The nuts have to be pretty much in the open to use one of those. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

A note on impact wrenches: They shake the chrome off 1/2" deep sockets pretty quick, and split them open soon after!

I just picked up a 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 set with shallow and deep, sae and metric with extensions and rachets for a good price with lifetime warrantee. It's more than I needed to fill in my set but it was cheaper than buying even a quarter of the stuff individually.

The chrome sockets have been know to have the finish come off and slice ones hand open!!!!!!!

John -- Not sure how old you are, but I'm past 40 and the tiny numbers on my old set of Craftsman sockets were getting awfully hard to read especially in low light. So I sprang for a starter set of 3/8 & 1/2" sockets with the large numbers etched into the chrome by laser. Can't overstate how nice it is not having to reach for the reading glasses to find the size I need!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When you get older you'll find a lot of the " Wrenching " is done by feel as them darned bifocals never seem to have the proper distance for focusing. You always keep drop sheets around to find all the parts that fell.

heck PETE i am a little past 60, and can hardly see them markings with glasses /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif it is a real chore trying to see the mark on oil dipstick /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

After you turn wrenches for a while, you can tell the size that you need just by looking at it. I have the problem with Metric, because I never worked on anything that had it until recently. I always felt that I would learn the metric system when the rest of the world converted to dollars and cents.... our original metric system.. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ain't gettin' old fun, Frank? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I just turned 64 a couple of days ago, with hearing aids in both ears, my spectacles in my pocket if they ain't on my face, and a little magnifying glass on my desk and one in my toobox. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif But I still got all my teeth; maybe that's more important since I haven't slowed down on my eatin'. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And perhaps the best thing . . . I got an annual report from our pension system today that listed 57 of my former co-workers who died this past year and my name wasn't on the list. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I read all the way through this thread and then came on you post and it rang true for me too.

I had laser surgery done to my eyes to improve my long distance vision and now I have to wear readers to see small things (like sizes on sockets and the dials on my machine tools).

In the not to distant future I'll have to outfit my machine tools with DRO's so I will have a digital display with large numbers so I don't have to squint!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
