Yes it was a 1500. Cannot comment on the 2500's as I did not check them out.

Last I had seen the 25-3500's were assembled in saltillo, mexico but the Cummins engines are built in Columbus indiana @ CMEP(Cummins Midrange Engine Plant)

The UK literally ran on 1.8 ford diesels in the late 80's / 90's and landrover TD4 wonderful engines .
The TD4 is an early 2000's engine, also a rebadged Peugeot. Landie built its own Diesel since 1957 but only began using a dedicated Diesel crank from 1980 onwards... The Oldsmobile 88 and Chevy 6.5/6.2 had the same problem, they were converted gas engines that couldnt take the Diesel compression...

The engine you speak of was the Olds 350 block, also used by other divisions of GM. The 6.2/6.5 was a Detroit Diesel design
Yes, true... had to do my research again... Olds 88 diesel and the Chevy/Detroit were two entirely different engines... the Olds was a disaster based on a gas engine, and the Chevy was developed as a PU truck engine by heavy diesel engineers, but nonetheless wasnt exactly flawless, compared to a Mercedes or Peugeot diesel of that era. It also had strength issues when a turbo was added.

===GM developed the diesels on the cheap. The 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V-8, for instance, was based on a gasoline engine.
The diesels were notoriously unreliable. They often suffered catastrophic internal failures curable only by a replacement engine that - made with the same defects - also failed. GM's engineering reputation took a major bruising.
GM diesels stunk up the market so badly that other automakers' diesel sales suffered.
