1/2 ton or 3/4 ton?

Trust me, I hate GM more than anyone. But the gas 2500 trucks used around here are a good buy often going for 50% less than a same year/mileage 1/2 ton.

Chris

I would check ebay for someone in the southern US letting go a high mileage Silverado 6.0 1500HD/2500 crew cab. Maybe 2002-2004. No reserve auctions on these tend to go for less than 10k. Only 5k mileage a year, its hard to justify much more of a truck. Im in the market for one myself, Ive been checking, to replace my 2002 HD1500 crew. Everything works, time to replace:thumbsup:

This is what I'm saying. They go cheap around here.

Thats my plan when it comes time to replace the wife's Caravan. We shall see if my inlaws (who own the farm and thus have final say) will go for buying a farm truck from out of state...

Found a Dodge locally, 2003 1500, Laramie, Quad Cab, 4WD (manual shift transfer case), 6.25 FT Bed, automatic transmission, 5.7L V8 Engine, tow package, 103k miles, pretty much loaded at a dealer that we have had good relations with in the past.
Its been sitting on the lot for a few months (has an PA inspection sticker that expired in Aug) and they are asking just over $10k
It appears that it is rated to tow 7500# (with a 150# driver and a quart of fuel ). Should this be enough truck (assuming that they want to come down in price)? I see them on Ebay (2002-2005 with under 150k miles) going for $5-10k depending on the truck.
Is there something like an Oasis report for Dodge trucks? Not sure I like it that much (would prefer a Ford), but others in the family like it and a bird in the hand...

As you figured out the Dodge 1/2 tons lack in the payload and towing capacity. It does not appear to be enough truck for you.

Going back and looking at your original requirements, it looks like its plenty of truck for you. If you like it, go for it.

On the other hand, I can drive down to PA and pickup a '05 F150 with a 5.4L V8 and 123k miles for $9.5k, or to Raleigh and get a 07 F150 with 77k miles for $10.5k or one with 156k miles for $9.5k...

In my opinion the 5.4 is very underpowered. I've had them in half tons 3/4 ton work vans 150,150 and 350s they have all ran like under powered dogs. They get bad fuel mileage to boot. The 6.2 ford offers has more power but not till you wind it up. The 5.0 I haven't owned but was decent power on a test drive. Still a little sluggish. Of all the gas engines ford has out I have to say the Eco boost is the best but of the two I test drove still just didn't feel right to me.

On the other other hand, there is a 2000 F450 with a flatbed and a 7.3 in Raleigh for $8k, but I don't think that we would want to get into something that big...
