Itç—´ free market capital. People willing to work and choosing how or when to do it. Cabs have been a monopoly for far too long, unchallenged and unchecked. Uber / Lyft is a huge benefit to the consumer.

I don't disagree that taxi medallions, especially in larger cities are a racket and the system is designed to restrict ownership, but let's be real here...Uber drivers are not "ride sharing", they're operating an unlicensed taxi with little or no accountability. The only difference is you can't hail one, you need to go thru a cellphone ap to contact one.
Even though I haven't ridden in any sort of cab since, I dunno, the early 80s maybe I have not problem with cities increasing the number of cab licenses, but I'm surprised cities haven't been able to better crack down on these gypsy cabs.

..Gypsy cabs ...well... I guess you are entitled to your own opinion. My opinion is that these "gypsies" as you call them..are people who are earning an honest living, providing a service that people want to pay for and need. Unfortunately I can see the long view on this and where Uber / Lyft will have its own fleets of self driving cars and thus make the driver component obsolete. ..this will most certainly happen in the next 10 years or sooner. Problem is that people want to stick their head in the sand and can't see that the world is evolving.

I use Uber and Lyft when we travel, they are great for getting to the airport, and cheaper too!

Business is always evolving. It's either evolve with it or be left behind. Taxis....are being left behind by cheaper, better and more convenient and responsive alternatives. .. when is the last time anyone went to their local travel agent to book a flight or vacation...? Companies like Amazon are killing companies like Sams and Walmart..who in turn killed the mom and pop store.. maybe that's Karma.
How about the yellow pages for business... when is the last time you thumbed through those..or as a business owner..paid for a add in them...they are as dead as the dinosaurs. ..

Back to the price of gasoline: here in Puget Sound it is still in the $3/gl range and we have a refineries just up the road. Didn't have time to read all the previous threads. Tax is a big part and our Gov wants to raise it some more under a proposed carbon tax.
