The 3220 (6,200 pounds rated capacity with 18 foot-6 inch lift height) and 3420 (6,600 pounds rated capacity with 23-foot lift height) replaced the 3200 and 3400 with Tier 2 engines rated at 114 horsepower up 14 percent and 360 foot-pounds of torque up 17 percent. Variable-displacement pumps and closed-center hydraulic systems replacing the open-center system increased oil flow 20 percent. Deere says cycle times improved by an average of 35 percent.

Examples:
JD 990 mounts with compact loader with 2880# lift capacity at full height of 11'.

I would like to see a JD990 lifting 2880lbs, which is nearly the weight of the tractor itself. What kind of counterweight is required - a cement truck mounted on the 3ph? How long do front axles/wheels/tires last in this use - a month? two months?

I was wondering about that 990 lift spec myself. Well, I don't have one, so ... who knows?

Back on topic, I would want a tractor in the 70+ hp range with a bare weight in the 8000# area for the task of lifting 2000# bales onto an 18 wheeler. And Add tire fluid + weights to counter balance the rear. It's all about stability and you want (need?) to have a tractor about 4x the weight of the load then add counter balance weight. Just sort of a guide, that.

On edit --

The 990 can only be had with the 300cx loader. I can't navigate the junky JD web site to find the loader specs, but I think that loader is in the 1500# range?

That is an accurate lift capacity - our loaders will fit the unit close to the front so you won't require such a "big" cement truck )- however you would need to have a ballast especially if you are frequently working at the full height of the loader. We've been selling loaders a long time (since 50's) and that JD has an excellent frame - no reinforcements or rear axle kit was called out. Our mounting brackets are also different as they distribute the weight of the load through the tractor frame and don't just center it in the mid-section of the tractor. We actually make a loader one size larger with a higher lift capacity of 3000# at full height. Look at the photos, the fit is excellent, below the hood and close to the front. We don't ever recommend a loader if the tractor can't handle the load capacity.

The 990 would get the job done if you unloaded that semi once a month. On the other had - if you were going to use this every day - I'd agree with Jon, that 70 - 90 HP range would be better and more comfortable.

I would be interested in a photo of the mounting bracket design.

Those loaders just look too big for a 990, but I'm not an engineer.

Well, you could get loaders that would lift 2000+ pounds for a ford 640. So, that lift range is not out of the question on a 40 hp tractor. Still, those 640's suffered from the loads.

It looks to me like the load is farther to the front than I would like to see in a loader. But tight tucked loaders don't seem to be in vogue now.

Just because the Lift capacity is 3000#, it doesn't mean you are going to max it out daily. But if you need it for a specific task, the power is there. If you were going to unload that semi daily you'd want a larger tractor.
You may perceive that a tight tucked loader is not "in vogue" because more and more of the OEM's try to use the same loader on as many model tractors as possible instead of having to stock multiple loaders. They are not focusing on the "fit". You can see in the JD photo how they tilted the 300x forward on the tractor to make it touch the ground. This will transfer more weight to the front axle. You'll acheive more power and strength if the tower/upright is straight and positioned as far back as possible (like JD 430 or TA-25). Compare a loader that fits well to a favorite pair of work gloves. If you wore a pair of gloves or shoes that were too big, they would feel sloppy and cumbersome.

I also include photo of the loader at full height, it was the best view I had of the bracket system. You can see how the brackets & tower wraps around the tractor. Then tower lowers to the ground for dismounting.

Thanks for the replies.

I started looking at the New Holland tn-60 & tn-70, but I'm still not set on New Holland, just that it seems to be the most for the cost. The other thing is that I only have a 7000# trailer, so going any bigger will also require me to get a heavy duty trailer.
I just wanted to know what size of tractor COULD do the job. I just didn't want to get a 40-50 hp and not be able to unload. If I actually had to get a trailer of hay, I would then be able to unload it with out having to hire someone to do it.
