10%-20% off JD list?

   / 10%-20% off JD list? #21
In September of 07, I purchased my 2320, 200CX, 62D, R4's for 21.3% off internet price - OTD, delivered to my door, full of fuel, with 0% for 36 months. They also threw in a JD hat and the first oil change (engine oil/filter only). This included all the setup fees, etc., that are not usually in the internet price.

I "built my own" on the JD website and then requested a quote from the five local dealers - all of which were in a 15 mile radius. A friend's son-in-law owns one of those dealers and he couldn't touch the price I was getting. He explained that the Ag dealer I bought mine from had recently purchase two smaller dealers and was trying to purchase a third. He was basically trying to buy his way into owning the market. I went with this large dealer and couldn't be happier. They delivered on my only day off - a Sunday! I had a little trouble with the mower deck after the first mowing and they immediately sent a very capable tech to my door for repairs. They even sent us a card for the kids to see Santa at their shop. When I went down there to buy an accessory, I did not tell the guy at the desk I bought there. He still treated my like their best customer. I am beyond happy!

The second (and third) closest price was about 16% off internet price (offered by the friend and also another dealer). This other dealer is also an Ag guy looking to buy the market. The fourth price was about 5% off, and the fifth was pretty much near list. The fifth dealer has a terrible reputation around here, so I wouldn't have bought from him even if he were the cheapest around.

It took me about a month to haggle this price. I do believe that dealer service is very important and I would be willing to pay a little more for a long term relationship. I think I got the best of both worlds with my deal.

My best quote (so far) is 11% off and includes freight, setup and delivery.

I was just quoted 11% of List price on a JD 5103 MFWD in the Memphis market area. This was the result of a cold start, walk-in off the street. So, it would stand to reason that there is some more pricing room available.

Update: Stopped by a Dealer in Central KY today and received a 10% discounted price on the same tractor. During the conversation, He said that he had $700 profit in that price. He had 23 tractors in the 5x03 line sitting on his lot. He claimed that is the best seller this year. All the local farmers are buying smaller tractors with the rise in diesel, and the drop in the economy.

On the HP question. He claimed the higher HP 5x03 tractors had a different camshaft installed in addition to the ECU programming. That is the first time I have heard that statement. Any comments?

JD can also increase the power of a tractor. My friend has a 7?10 and JD increased the power to the equivelant of the next size tractor. I also notice on "build your own" than some tractors offer a power option that will deliver either 10 hp or 10% more power (can't remember which) in certain situations.

JD's markup may be different for the different series tractors. For example, you may be able to purchase a 4720 for 80% of internet price, and a 6430 for 84% of internet price from the same dealer. Therefore, it may be hard to compare how much one guy got discounted unless it is for the same series tractor. Just a guess.
