Sugar and borax works good for all ants. Dish soap is another option, but I've never tried it.

It may be a losing battle but I want to fight it anyway. How do I get rid of all these fire ant mounds? Is there an attachment that I can use on the 3pt to spread ant poison? Do they sell it in bulk at the Co/op? Do you even worry about it?

A losing battle indeed. Never underestimate fire ants. You can get rid of them temporarily but they will quickly return. They like the southern USA and are here to stay.

Well as long as they are already there and cannot be eradicated, I hope they stay down south.

If you will kill them across your property and then faithfully spray around the field annually that will do good job with them.Well it works on yard and field is just a large yard.

I fully agree KThompson.. I had great success w/ spreading OverN Out in a tow behind spreader.. I mixed Weed N Feed & O N O in the same spreader..
lasted 2 years.. on an overgrown abandoned property..

Good link, couple of quotes for people like me that like to buy in bulk for the long term:
Don稚 buy more bait than you can use in one season because the oil in fire ant baits will go rancid, and fire ants don稚 like rancid bait.
Tips for Using Fire Ant Baits
Always read the label at least twice熔nce before buying and again before treating. Follow the label directions.
Buy only as much bait as you need. Most baits contain vegetable oils, which go rancid over time, and fire ants don稚 like rancid bait.
Be sure you have the right kind of applicator to do the job.
Calibrate your applicator properly. One to two pounds per acre is not very much bait. It may look like the spreader is not putting out enough bait just a granule here and there?*ut this is probably about right! Follow the calibration directions that came with the spreader.
Try to pick a time when it is not likely to rain for a day or two after treatment. Rainfall will wash away or dissolve your costly bait. Reapply if you get significant rain within six to twelve hours of your treatment.
Wait until the grass is dry before applying the bait.
Don稚 be tempted to apply excessive rates in order to 途eally get 弾m. If you are willing to spend more money for improved control, it痴 much better to spend it on a second application later in the season!
Don稚 worry if you have a few gaps between your bait swaths. Remember, the fire ant workers are out there looking for the bait. This is one reason baits work so well.
Know what results to expect. Baits aren稚 fast, and they won稚 eliminate every mound in the area, but by one to two months after treatment, you should get around 80 percent control.
If your goal is to maintain a very high level of control around a horse barn or other sensitive area, don稚 wait until you start seeing new mounds before treating again. Apply baits preventively in spring, midsummer, and fall.

Last weekend I tried some Ortho Orthane on a few mounds on the five acres around the house. I will check it next week when I get home to see how it did. I had a few mounds that were too large to hit with the mower.

Me too. We get the little sugar ants that invade our house. Tis the season and they are coming back. They seem attracted to water so we see them showing up in our kitchen and bath but no where else.
