I have heard that e 90 is going to be replaced by e 85. (I believe it's what it's called) I have read this 85% gas will do in most older engines; including lawn mowers, gas saws, vintage engines in tractors etc., vintage cars and you name it. Also, I have heard no additives will be made to take fuel up to levels that will protect older engines.

Have I heard or understood wrong?

30 proof gas?

Sounds like an opportunity for ridge runners to break into the automotive fuel market. Gotta love this new "green" economy.

I wonder if Willie Nelson's will get in on this like biodiesel?

It is not going to replace e10, it will supposedly be sold along side it. E15 can't be run in older vehicles. If their sold side by side then folks will likely make mistakes.

Whoa.....E85 is up to 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline....already on the market as "E-85".

Today's gasolines are allowed to have a up to a 10% blend of ethanol....the proposal being looked at is to increase the allowable blend to 15% ethanol.

If your engine runs OK with 10% ethanol, 15% will probably be OK......your fuel system is already resistant to the corrosive effects. If you have had problems with 10%, 15% will make them worse. There are also issues with Phase separation of the gas/ethanol and then the ethanol soaks up all the moisture in the tank and your engine stalls due to the watery mess getting pulled in. Best to use a fuel stabilizer designed for ethanol, for example the marine version of stabil, to avoid phase separation.

Most engines made in the past 6-8-10 years are designed with 10% in mind so they should be fine.

Some engines might require slightly richer jetting in order to have the correct A/F ratio. Ethanol has a higher octane, but burns hotter and requires more flow to maintain A/F.

Folks with 2 stroke snowmobiles are very concerned that the additional ethanol might cause their engines to run lean enough to burn down....the snowmobile industry is running tests to verify.

I run 10% in everything and have had no issues....weedwackers, 2 and 4 stroke snowmobiles, lawnmowers, etc....but most of my engines are 10 years old or less. I have fueled up my 1950 "B" John Deere as well but I run heavy fuel stabilizers in it as I don't run it very often. No problems so far......

Almost everybody I know blew up their snowmobiles the first year ethanol was introduced. Now they all have to get their carbs rebuilt every year (since they refuse to get with the gas-draining program). I haven't had issue in any of my 15 or so gas-powered toys, but I store them with the fuel systems completely dry.

E85 Fuel is called "FLEX FUEL". It has been on the market now for several years. Walk thru a parking lot and look at the rear of vehicles. If the vehicle was manafactured to use E85 FLEX FUEL it will say "FLEX FUEL" on the rear trunk or tail gate. E85 in some locations is cheaper than regular gas. People have started to try and use E85 in vehicles not manafactured for E85. Damage could occur in these vehicles. People are also upset when they stop for fuel and see the E85 fuel is cheaper than the regular gasoline and they cannot use it. Some ignore the warning not to use and use anyway. Gasoline Stations that offer E85 are not readily aavailable in any location. Do a GOOGLE search on E85 and then look at the Stations selling E85 in your area. Any station that sells E85 fuel has the pump labeled as such and if one put E85 fuel in their vehicle it is an intentional act, not something the gas company slipped by them under the cloak of darkness.
