couple questions.

1, what's the opinion of the 10 cyl gassers. i saw a couple in what I think were a dodge 3500 and ford 350.. say.. 97-2003 era.

2, when did the ford 7.3l go to turbo and powerstroke? 94?

I've heard pretty positive reviews about the performance of both the Dodge and Ford V10's. I've heard that the Dodge was particularly horrible in the fuel economy department and I've heard that the early Ford V10's weren't far behind. Actually I think that the only complaints that I've ever heard about the Ford and Dodge V10's and for that matter the GM 8.1 V8 were their poor fuel economy.

My parents had a 15 passenger E350 with the V10 for a few days while the dealership worked on our van (1999 15 pass E350 with a 7.3L Powerstroke).
As I recall, it had similar power to the 7.3, but drank a lot more gas (8-10MPG vs 12-15MPG going around town). I think they said something about it having a high powerband too, but that was quite a few years back.

The Powerstroke diesel (turbo/direct injection) was introduced as a 94.5 model year option. I had a 94 F-350 and it was the last non-turbo IDI (in-direct injection) diesel engine. They were rock solid reliable but it felt weaker than V8 gassers of the same era.

Powerstroke Diesel - 235 HP / 535 LB.FT
Non-turbo IDI Diesel - 185 HP / 360 LB.FT

The V10's of the same era were perfect for those that wanted diesel torque without the diesel maintenance but you pay for it at the pump.

Ford 7.3 IDI N/A was offered from 87/88-1994
Ford 7.3l IDI Turbo was offered in 1993
Ford 7.3l DI Turbo was offered in 1994 in Manual transmission only
Ford 7.3l DI Turbo was the only available diesel engine from 1995-2003
2003 was a mixed year, you could get a late 7.3, or an early 6.0

Ford began offering the V-10 as an option with the introduction of the Superduty trucks in 1998.5 (1999 model year)

Prior to 1998 the largest gas engine offered was a 460, and a Superduty was actually a 10 lug, ~1-1/2 ton truck. Solid front axle.

A little trivia, there was never a 1998 Ford F250 or F350.

Dodge offered the V-10 beginning in 1994, with the introduction of the new body style ram truck, only offered in regular cab. They also offered a 5.9 CTD 12v w/ NV4500 tranny

In 1995, Dodge offered an extended cab.

In 1998 Dodge had a few changes, you could get a Quad cab or an extended cab... additionally, you could get a 12v CTD or the new 24v CTD.

In 1999 Dodge went to quad cab and 24v only, in their extended cab style trucks.

I think it was 2000 or 2001 they began offering the NV5600 (6 spd)

In 2003 Dodge went to the common rail 5.9 CTD.

FWIW,
I think the real cherries were OBS 1997 F350 4x4 PSD, 2002/2003 F350 4x4 PSD, and 1998 Dodge quad cab, 12v CTD 4x4.

Probably more information than you were looking for, but what the heck, I am bored here at the office.

The dodge V10 was an 8 liter engine and the ford is only 6.8 liters. Gas suckers but only the ford version was found in a crew cab truck. Nice and quiet, lightweight, and capable enough. The shortbed trucks with their 28 gallon tanks, 6-8 mpg towing, means you were stopping to refuel every few hours while on the road. That would get old fast.

Ford v-10s had this peculiar issue of spitting spark plugs, threads and all.

I had a '94 F-350 dually Supercab that had the 7.3 idi Turbo. It was equipped from the factory with an ATS turbo. The turbo really woke up the 7.3 idi. Very good engine that made decent power. The first Powerstroke hit the market in late '94, offered only with a manual trans.

I've put over 200k on my '96 dodge with a v-10. Mileage is around 10-12 on average. No issues whatsoever other than standard maintenance stuff. I couldn't be happier with the reliability and dependability that this truck has provided over the years.
