Fishguy said:Eric, When you say it's OK for you need, what do you mean? I have a 25hp CUT and am in the market for a disc and I'm not sure what size I should get. I have 4wd but turf tires. I'm wanting to smooth out some previous farmland. Any ideas or suggestions?

Steve,
You are doing what I have been upto for the past two years. We built a new house on a corn field. Last year around the house I sprayed the weeds with roundup and took my flimsy light weight disc you find at the farm store, 6.5" KK from TSC added a couple hundred pounds of old window weights and went at it. The extra weight helped but probably not essential. Serveral times over the ground and the top several inches were all loosened up. The thing I wish I had done is then take a drag to help smooth things out some more. Now my soil goes from sandbox to sandy loam to gravely. I don't have the nasty clay that a lot of people on this list deal with.
Now for the back pasture area I plowed it with a 3x14 moldboard and have been discing it when ever I get the chance to get into the field with out swimming. Back there is some areas with higher clay content and a wet area that had a thick stalked ornamental grass stuff that is taking a bit of work to break up. I have noticed on the plowed ground I would not want much more than the 6.5' disc. When I was doing the stuff around the house that was not plowed I could have pulled more. I would bet your 25 hp with turf tires could pull one of these 6.5' discs. This pasture is going to need draging and a cultipacker when I get done. I am sure I will have this ground so over worked nothing with grow in it
Why I like these little 3ph disc is they are easy to move around. Yes a big wheeled or drag disc if I could pull it would work faster but I don't have remotes to raise and lower the wheels if they are hydralic and the drag disc is engaged in the ground all the time so getting form one place to another you are digging up the ground. With the 3ph disc when I get to the end of a row I can just lift the disc turn and put it back down. If I had a drag disc I would need to judge when I needed to start turning to get right to the edge, you could also get yourself stuck if you miss judged by a fence row or ditch. Doing small areeas is just easier to do with something that you can pick up. I hope this helps. It is a long answer to your short question.
