What is the point of a swing measurement anyway? Other than to know you need to divide by 2 to get the "useful" throat measurement?

I doubt many will dispute this, and it should answer most all questions.

I wish I was a corporate CEO (at least paycheck-wise) ... but I have many power tools.

10" in a 10" drill press refers to the width of a board that you can drill a hole to the center of. Cool,

I bought a Ryobi 10" drill press 7 or 8 years ago, not really focusing on the 10" part, just wanted a decent drill press, & it did the trick for what I needed at the time.

A friend of mine needed to drill some 4x4s, so also bought himself a 10" drill press, & was disappointed to find out a 10" drill press apparently doesn't drill a 10" deep hole. I think it drills a 2.5" to 3" deep hole.

So ... What's "10 inches" about a 10" drill press?

Drill as deep as you can go. Stop the drill. Raise the table with the drill bit still in the 4x4. Clamp the table and drill the rest of the way. The depth is limited only by the length of your drill bit. So you can drill 10" if you have a 12" bit!
Next option is again, drill as deep as possible, stop the drill, raise the quill and lift the 4x4 (same as above). Rather than raising the table, slide a 2x4 under the 4x4. Restart the drill and drill the rest of the way through the 4x4.
