I'm considering buying a new Cub LT 1042. I only have about 2/3 acre to cut and only need a small tractor. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a 1018 which I bought last spring and have been very happy with.
This is the same unit as the 1042, except that mine has a Briggs ELS
engine rather than this year's Kohler. They have added a nice feature this year which enables you to bypass the annoying no-mow-in-reverse
system. In years past this had to be accomplished by disabling the switch. They have also added a deck wash nozzle so you can flush out your deck by attaching a garden hose to it. I question the wisdom of doing this with a steel deck, as it will probably just cause it to rust faster.

The 1000 Cubs are very comfortable, the controls are convenient, and they seem well made, probably the best value for the money. They also do a great job of mowing, cutting the clippings into very fine pieces that disappear into the lawn. Sears/ Husqvarna have some similarly-priced models, but if you look carefully, they are just not as sturdy (step on the floorboard and watch it flex), and they still use the rather inconvenient hand control for the hydro.

Well I took the plunge yesterday and bought the 1042. I did a lot of research and I also found that the Cub seemed to be built more sturdy than the competitors for the comparible model. I also liked the fact that the Cub had the Kohler engine. I've had some bad luck with the B&S. I bought the bagger to go with it. I cut with it yesterday and was very pleased. I've been cutting with one of the old rear engine Snappers with a stationary deck for the last 10 years or so. Although I don't think you could own a "tougher" mower, the difference in usability and cutting performance is like night and day. Thanks for the feedback!

Good luck with your new mower. I did a lot of looking last year before I decided on the Cub. I went in looking to buy a Deere, but the Cub seemed like a better unit for less money.

I'm considering buying the same Cub LT 1042. I had done some research and was going to buy a Toro but too expensive and then the Troybilt @ Lowes, but i think i might settle on the Cub from a local dealer. Did you guys find any bad info on the Cub? Any parts that are out of the ordinary for normal maintenance, which i need to be aware of to maintain?

No trouble yet, but I've only had it for a year. I really don't see any potential trouble spots on it. It seems well engineered for the money.

I am trying to decide between the 1042 and the 1046. The 1046 has the two cylinder Kohler and a 46 inch deck. Is it worth the extra $200.00? How does the 1042 work on hills? I need to mow my hills going across instead of up and down and it is about a 30 degrees slope.

Thanks

Neil,
after researching tractors, we settled on the LT1042 and decided to purchase from Lowe's since they offered a 2 year warranty with the option to purchase a 3 year extended warranty for just over $100. Lowe's will pick up the mower at your residence and repair it. Other dealers had the same price but did not offer such a service option. After 5 years of trouble with our John Deere LT133 we thought that was an attractive option. Hope this helps!

Congrats!

Pickup and delivery is only covered the first year of ownership.

Also, understand that the Extended warranty is through Lowe/NEW and not Cub Cadet.

If you have any issues use the number that Lowes gave you for service. If you dont have it call the store and ask for the NEW service number in case you have a problem.

Be thankful the warranty is through lowes and not cub. Even cub tech says don't call cub. My experience with cub reps are not very satisfying. Everyones fault but cubs.
