1050 woods backhoe hydraulic problems

Before you do that, check and see if your hyd system has a suction leak and generating air in the hyd system. Look for small air bubbles in the reservoir/tank.

Air in the cyl will cause a cyl to move or fall when you first open the lever for any cyl with any weight on it.

Try and bleed the air out by cycling all the BH cyl about 5 times.

Thanks JJ. I'll do that first as soon as I get a chance. I'll need to find a ledge or something that will allow me to lower the boom cylinder all the way.

I realize this is quite a few years later when I saw your post and you may never respond but here it goes. I was following your discussion because I have a Woods BH9000 with a very similar issue and just when I thought I would read what your results were the posting ended. Does anyone know the outcome of the drifting boom? was it air or was it the check valve.? Thanks in advance.

A lot of people never come back and tell us the results.

If you have good hyd flow and good operation to other spools on the BH, the problem is in the boom circuit.

If you have a drifting boom, it could be bad piston seals on the boom cyl, worn boom spool on the valve,
and some have a relief valve on the boom cyl.

You could put our boom in the air and see if it drifts down over night.

This wasn't evident when I looked at it a couple of weeks before when I actually agreed to purchase it. There was an outrigger hydro line leak which the owner replaced before it was delivered to me. We mounted it on my tractor immediately and left it in the locked stowed position for a day. I took it out of the barn the next day to go over everything and realized both the boom and dipper stick cylinders were drifting pretty badly. They drift down to a complete relaxed position in about two minutes. I haven't verified the bucket yet. The previous owner told me there was some drift when it was delivered but not how much. Shame on me for not checking. When I called him he said the bad drifting started after I looked at it. (who knows) I double checked the hydraulic reservoir and there is no fluid evident on the dip stick. The owner stated that may have been a result of the outrigger hose breaking and he also replaced a second hose on the outrigger(stabilizer). I am going to top it off and see if that purges any possible air in the system. Keep you posted

The thing about buying used equipment, even from a friend is, they are wanting to get rid of it.

They will do what it takes to make it look and operate correctly for that moment in time. It work OK for me is a favorite line.

If you know your stuff you can do a thorough check out before you agree to buy.

The boom dropping that fast would be suspicious.

The cyls on my FEL will descend over night.

Sorry for your troubles.
