1070 2-R Shift linkage question

So the linkage between the shifter and the transmission came apart and apparently it allowed the shift fork and shaft to separate inside the transmission. So my question is, does anyone know if this can be fixed without breaking open the tranny? There is what appears to be an access plate held on by 3 bolts just below where the linkage would connect. Any help would be much appreciated.
