10KW Homemade generator

( Just do a search for Lister generators. They are now being made in India, sold by inport/exports similar to Jinma's. They are huge heavy very efficient. Same design for 100 years, sounds like a steam engine. Saw a display a while back at a farm show, I loved the looks and sounds of them, just did not have the money.... )

Here are two links to "Listeroids" as the India made Listers are generally called.

utterpower contains general all around information.

Rocketboy's Lister project contains a guys description of building a Listeroid system, including a video of him starting it.

Lister engine

This type of engine is/has been used extensively in the oilfiels to power pump jacks. Usually a propane fueled engine, not a diesel. They are usually run continually. Very dependable

There is more than one maker of this type of engine but just offhand can't remember the names of the makers.

Chipped a tooth and got a nice three stich cut on my chin when the starting crank sliped off as I was starting one.

I would second the Utterpower suggestion. I have dealt with them and they know their stuff. You can inexpensively obtain a 1800RPM 10KW head there to serve as the basis for your PTO generator.

You will still have to bump your pto rpm up with pulleys to match the generator as Soundguy suggested. If you have enough tractor hp you might want to run lower than full pto speed for economy/longevity. For example I wouldn't run my M6800 at full pto speed (62 pto hp) when the application requires no more than 20 hp or so (10Kw gen head).

Do a google on speed increaser. Hydraulic motor with flow control for cycles might be cheaper. I saw a website with hyd gensets recently.

( How about a big splined pulley that fit on the tractor pto.. and then size the pulley hubs so that your tractors 540 is the gennies 3600? I'm guessing a machine shop could turn both pullies out of billet aluminum fairly easilly.

you would need a 30" spline pully to drive a 4.5" pully to get 3600 rpm. just my 2cents.

I've seen log mills with setups like that.. so it isn't totally out of the ballpark. In the old days I've seen even bigger pulley setups.

Might be able to rig something with a diffy and tranny.. or just a tranny off an old junk vehicle..

Or start with one of those import tractors that has a 1000 rpm (or faster) PTO.

Addendum:

Hmmm... A 4 ft rotary mower (Howse) has a 1.93 ratio. Using that gearbox behind a 1000 rpm PTO, it would be easy to put 1800 rpm into the generator using a direct coupling.

In fact starting from an old mower would give you a 3-point chassis to build the whole thing on.

Here's a nice setup at utterpower.com.
pto generator
I think I'll run one off the front pto which is the same rpm as the engine. With a pulley setup I could have the engine speed just over an idle

Years ago I read or heard about a way to use a 3 phase motor to make a generator. I've never seen anything lately so was it a myth or was there reasons that made it unworkable? Something about changing the wiring pattern and exciting the current. If it could be done it would sure interest me in trying to make one.
