Now, all I have to do is figure out how many quarts of ATF I need to change the grease in the radiator!!!

And don't forget to switch to synthetic headlight fluid after 10 hours of night work.

And the sticker on the hydro resevoir states 5-30w only...but the owners manual states 10-40w motor oil.

I guess Power Trac bought a lot of those stickers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was ol' Ralph Waldo, I think, who wrote: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Ain' no hobgoblins in Tazewell. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use Blue Whale Oil for that popular bluish H. I. D. look!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

One of the most informative forums for oils and lubricants which I have found is:
BOBISTHEOILGUY
The folks that frequent the site are, by and large, pretty well informed about composition and chemistry of a wide range of lubes. Many are either oil chemists or petroleum engineers. There is a section on the Forum devoted to hydraulic lubricants. What I have gleaned from the discussions is that hydraulic fluids are better for hydraulic applications than are non-hydraulic oils. Moreover, synthetic hydraulic fluids are better than dino hydraulic fluids. And, as the discussions go, many recommend synthetic ATF as the hydraulic fluid of choice.

While I was at Tazewell last week, I discussed this with Terry. He indicatd that one of PT's goals was to keep things as straightforward and as economical as practical. Hence, their election of using 10Wxx motor oil in the hydraulic system. It works and it's readily available and inexpensive. He indicated that any of the high quality synthetic or synthetic blend oils or hydraulic oils would be "fine" in the PT, but why go to all the expense/effort? It sort of conjured up a Gertrude Stein-ism: "A difference to be a difference must make a difference."
Personally, I favor the synthetics and the designated hydraulic fluids. At the end of the warranty period, I will most likely switch to a synthetic or synthetic blend hydraulic fluid, or ATF. I'll certainly keep tuned to the Forum to learn more before I have to cross that bridge.

At 50 hours I drained the xW-xx OEM motor oil from my PT-425, and replaced it with Amsoil Synthetic TRACTOR HYDRAULIC/Transmission Oil www.amsoil.com/products/ath.html !!

Since then, now 100 hours, the PT has run fine, and I sleep like a baby, a geriatric baby, but still a baby!!

Was it expensive?? Yes, but oil is cheaper than repairs!!

The main reason for the change was that the continually overheated hydraulics on the PT-425, ("Oil operating temperature should not exceed 200° F. with a maximum of 180° F. generally recommended. 120° F to 140° F. is generally considered the optimum system operating temperatures. High temperatures result in rapid oil deterioration and may point out a need for an oil cooler or a larger reservoir. The nearer to optimum temperature, the longer the service life of the oil and the hydraulic components."), were forecasting problems with the dino oil. Since my hydraulic oil is usually ~100 degrees above ambient, I hope that the high temperature performance of this synthetic will increase the service life of my PT-425.
