Friends of ours just sold their home; essentially it's one of the largest homes in this county:

- +8500 sq ft house with 3 car garage; no 240 vac plugs
- +3 car detached garage, no 240 vac plugs
- +$85k horse barn, no 240 vac plugs

The guy buying the place? If he needs some welding done, he won't be buying a welder or putting in any 240 vac plugs. He'll just buy a welding company. He's a billionaire and he's barely over 30.

The "$10.8 million shop/barn and a $200,000 house" would likely not be possible on Nantucket.
The island has very strict building restrictions.

Never mind Nantucket as it seems that every city is going crazy with regulations and permits for just about everything.
Naturally none of which are cash grabs.

Latest in my area is your driveway grade.
They claim it is for emergency vehicle access.
Building permit, well permit, septic permit, soil analysis, garage permit, surveys, and recently survey to assure that U are X distance from all neighbor septics and wells.
Then renovation permits as well. In some areas U need to have colors approved B4 painting.
Forgot, fire or burn permit.
All of which have fees attached.
Making it worst they take up to 60 days to issue some permits.

Another is a permit to cut dead trees which when issued specifies that U replace it.

holy crap....when did the Californians move in there and take over your government.

but then again even we have Building permits, septic permits and well permits. burn permits are free, but you have to log in and tell them your burning...that way they wont send truck if neighbor calls about seeing smoke. There is some debate going on about driveway width for fire trucks (maybe thats a good thing, i have been on service calls where my dodge truck cant fit between trees).. i can cut and burn any tree i like.

Adding a 220 outlet is usually pretty easy but adding a hose bib on a finished home is not. I have worked on some of these Mc-Mansions over the years and recall many times when we had to run 200' or more of hose because there was only one hose bib and it was usually on the opposite side of the house from where we were working.
